Philip's reign began in 10-1285, "one of the most momentous in the history of mediaeval Europe, yet it belongs rather to the history of France and to that of the papacy than to the biography of the king...."{Encycl.Brit.,`56,17:719} He subjugated the papacy, destroyed the powerful Order of the Temple, and laid the basis for the national monarchy of France. He was single-minded and determined and a reformer. Three of his sons succeeded in turn to his throne, and his daughter, Isabella, married King Edward II of England.

Philip IV (born 1268, ruled 1285-1314). Called the Fair, Philip IV carried out a prolonged power struggle with the Roman popes. His reign was notable chiefly for the development of royal power, the increase in taxation, the meeting of the first session of the Estates-General, and for his eventual triumph over Pope Boniface VIII (see Boniface VIII). Philip persuaded Clement V, who became pope in 1305, to move the papacy from Rome to Avignon in southern France. This relocation, called the Babylonian Captivity of the church, lasted from 1309 until 1377.

Philippe IV le Bel (ruled 1285-1314) had three sons who reigned in turn: Louis X le Hutin (1314-16), Philippe V le Long (1316-24), Charles IV le Bel (1324-28). The wives of all three sons were implicated, to varying degrees, in an adultery scandal in the early 1300s (the scandal of the tower of Nesles), which cast strong doubts over the legitimacy of their offspring, in particular, Jeanne, only daughter of Louis. Louis repudiated his wife and married Clemence of Hungary; he died before his first son was born, Jean I who lived 5 days (1316). Thus, the question of succession of a female to the throne was posed for the first time under the Capetians. The expected regent, Philippe comte de Poitou, argued the possible illegitimacy of his niece to have her passed over for succession, and his decision was endorsed by the Parliaments and Councils. Likewise, he died without sons and his daughter was passed over for Charles IV who died without children. In 1328, all male children of Philippe IV had died without male issue, and the female issue was compromised. Philippe IV's daughter Isabelle had married Edward II of England. Philippe's brother Charles de Valois had died in 1326, and his eldest son Philippe, comte de Valois, was chosen as king by the Estates General little enclined to hand the crown to the English king. This was the start of the house of Valois."

He was a wheelwright, and followed the trade for many years, in time moving to Paxton, where he lived for a while before coming to Shamokin. After settling in the latter borough he followed mining and the lumber business until 1890, from which time until his death he lived retired. He married Lydia Rebuck, who was from the Mahantango Valley, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Maurer) Rebuck, and she died Nov. 28, 1881. Mr. Hartlein died July 9, 1893, and both are buried in the Shamokin cemetery. They had a large family, viz.: Mary married Gabriel Snyder and they live in Shamokin; they have had seven children. Amelia married Harvey Maurer, of Shamokin, and has had sixteen children. Abbie married Charles Kerstetter, of Shamokin, and has had fifteen children. Jared died in infancy. Elmira married John Drumheller, of Shamokin, and has had twelve children. Margaret married August Ross and they are living at Shamokin; they have had ten children. Harry died in infancy. George W. is mentioned below. Alice, who died in Shamokin in 1895, was the wife of Frank Sheetz and had five children. The son of Dr. Gilmore W. and Alice F. (Leigh) Soule, he was born September 7, 1938, in Damariscotta, Maine. Dan was a loving husband and proud father. He enjoyed history, golf, traveling, hunting, fishing, gardening, and cooking. His family was everything to him. Dan will be remembered as a willing conversationalist, almost always having some knowledge or interesting tidbit to add regardless of the topic. His smile and own special brand of humor will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Dan was predeceased by two sons, Michael and Joshua; a daughter, Mary; and granddaughter, Allison. Dan is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jeanne Gamage; his sister, Mary Ingalls; one son, Dan Jr. (Eileen); four daughters, Ann (Kevin), Martha (Dorn), Kathy (Troy) and Wendy (Jeff); and 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren."

She was a 1922 graduate of the Jefferson School of Nursing, Philadelphia, and a member of the school's alumni association. Born Jan. 8, 1900, in Elizabethville, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Eva Gruver Uhler. She is survived by a daughter, Miss Ardith, with whom she lived; three sons, Richard L. of West Chester, David W. of Northumberland, and S. Timothy of Camp Hill; and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Hoover Funeral Home, Elizabethville, by the Rev. Taylor M. Potter. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Elizabethville."
