John was a farmer at the head of Northern Bay in Penobscot, ME. He purchased the eastern part of Lots 85-86 from his father in 1808 for $1,000. The farm included 100 acres and was later divided between his daughter Sylvia Clement, is grandson Uriah Leach and his granddaughter Julia Wardwell. The farm began at Little Marsh Creek (runs into the Bay just aft of Hutchins Point, to he line just after Berzinis' Garage [1997]). He and Abigail are buried on their homestead (Leach-Wardwell Cemetery). Hosea Wardwell's diary mentions that the first bricks were made in Penobscot on John's farm in 1807 on Leach's
Point (now known as Hutchins Point). There were several brickyards in Penobscot and Castine in the 19th century.
