[660] Variant of the surname is Wardell at the time of Thomas' emigration. He arrived at Boston, MA in 1633. He then moved to Exeter, NH in 1638 because of a religious controversy in First Church, Boston. He was a founder of the the church at the falls of the Piscataqua in Jan. 1639. He was judge of small cases at Exeter in 1643. In the spring of 1641 the Exeter militia elected Thomas their sergeant. See "Penobscot Pioneers," Philip Howard Gray (Camden: Penobscot Press, 1994), p. 107, and "Pioneers of Massachusetts - 1620-1650," Charles Henry Pope (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2013), p. 479 and "The Pioneers of Maine and New Hamphsire, 1623-1660," Charles Henry Pope (Baltimore, MD: Clearfield Co., reprinted 2002), p. 222. For the culture of New England during his lifetime and beyond, see "Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America," David Hackett Fischer (NY: Oxford University Press, 1989), pp. 13-205.
[41149] "History of that Part of the Susquehanna and Juniata Valleys . . . " (Pjiladelphia: Everts, Peck and Richards, 1886), Vol. 2, p. 1199 states that William is son of John Forster Wilson of Hartly Twp., Union Co., PA. Ancestry.com offers: "Wilson Name Meaning - English, Scottish, and northern Irish: patronymic from the personal name Will, a very common medieval short form of William."
