[5680] William was Baron Mauduit of Handslope and Hardy Manduit, Buckinghamshire, Chamberlain of the Exchequer, son of Robert Manduit (d. 1222, Lord of Hanslope, Chamberlain of the Exchequer) and his wife Isabel Basset. Robert's maternal grandfather was Simon de St. Liz (d. 1153, Earl of Huntingdon). {Ancestral Roots..." (Balt., 1992) 84-27} See Burke, p. 399. William is greatgrandson of William Mauduit, Chamberlain to King Henry I.
[15594] Reliance is the daughter of Elkanah Paine and Reliance Young. A reply to query on ancestry.com: "According to research I have just done in various volumes of the 'Mayflower Descendant' of which I have a CD Reliance Paine, born and baptized in Truro, Mass. on February 10, 1739/40 was the daughter of Elkanah Paine and wife, Reliance Young. They were married March 10, 1719/20. Reliance (Young) Paine died June 122,1757 in her 58th year. Reliance Young was the daughter of Henry and Sarah Young born March 8, 1699/70. Henry Young died and Sarah then married Jonathan Sparrow. There is conjecture as to whether or not her family was Snow. - Chester Files" Elkanah Paine is son of Thomas Paine (b. 1656 in Truro, MA) and Hannah Shaw (b. 1662 in Plymouth, MA). Ancestry.com offers: "Paine Name Meaning - English (mainly Kent and Sussex): from the Middle English personal name Pain(e), Payn(e) (Old French Paien, from Latin Paganus), introduced to Britain by the Normans. The Latin name is a derivative of pagus outlying village, and meant at first a person who lived in the country (as opposed to Urbanus city dweller), then a civilian as opposed to a soldier, and eventually a heathen (one not enrolled in the army of Christ). This remained a popular name throughout the Middle Ages, but it died out in the 16th century."
