[35877] Nancy last r. Bagley, Guthrie Co., IA according to her death record - see "United States Social Security Death Index," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V3XJ-W2N). "Des Moines Tribune, 12 December 1951," p. 17: WAUKEE, IA - Ah, such soft feminine words to describe a livestock truck driver "sweet" "gentle" "tiny" "gay." Yet, the words are carefully chosen to picture one of the veteran truckers of Dallas county. Meeting Nancy Paullin, wearing an apron and smiling at the door of her kitchen and surrounded by the savory odor of cooking meat you'd never suspect that this smiling little lady has been a licensed truck driver, loading tons of horses, cattle and hogs into her two-ton truck for 17 years. Before that, for years she helped her husband, Irwin Paullin, on his truck. "Oh, it Isn't always a bed of roses," Nancy said, with a gay laugh. Mrs. Paullin, who weighs 115 pounds and is 5-feet-3 in her medium-height heels, is widely popular in Dallas and Madison counties among farmers, stock buyers and rival truckers. Slender but plenty wiry Nancy has built up a reputation for skillful handling of livestock. "No bed of roses," she said. Perhaps she was thinking of last year when a big work horse, just as she turned from trying to soft-talk him out of tha truck, leaped toward her. A foot came down on her ankle. "It had me on crutches a while. I couldn't truck for four days. It didn't break but it was all colors up to the knee for weeks," she said. Perhaps she was thinking of the time an unruly cow whirled around in the truck and knocked her down. Or, the time a wild stallion reared in the truck and brought a hoof down to put a dent in the cab roof. Every Wednesday - sale day at the Adel sales barn, Nancy's there to truck away stock purchased. Several other days a week she's at the Winterset sales barns. Between times, early mornings, late at night, almost any time, Nancy is called to haul livestock to packing houses, stockyards, and between farms. "The last two years, I've hauled only livestock. I've had to slow down. Before that, I hauled anything corn, beans, oats, coal and lime." In a Waukee gas station, I talked with a couple of truckers. They had nothing but praise for Nancy. "Listen, brother," one said. "A couple of years ago it would push any man, no matter how husky, to keep up with Nancy scooping corn or beans. Believe me, she really could handle a scoop." Born Nancy George, one of eight children, Mrs. Paullin was a "town girl" until she married Irwin and started farming. After about three years, Irwin became a trucker. "At first I used to ride with Irwin, helping him with the loading and driving. Then I asked him to get a truck for me and I've been trucking ever since," she said. Until they moved four years ago into the quaint multi-gabled, 11-room house at the south edge of Waukee, the Paullins lived at Booneville. They have a 69-acre place, which Irwin farms in between trucking jobs. They keep beef cattle, calves, hogs and chickens. "Our hours are too irregular to keep milk cows; can't depend on getting back by milking time. Many times, late at night, we're out in the barns scooping corn, filling the oats feeders, gathering eggs and the like," Nancy said. Trucking also eliminated Nancy's social life. Back in Booneville, she tried belonging to clubs. Most times she couldn't attend and when her turn came to entertain, she'd likely get called away for a trucking job. "Finally, I just gave up," she said. Somewhere, between jobs, Nancy finds time to cook meals, do the washing and ironing, dust the lovely, well-furnished big house. Irwin has helped, too, doing dishes and such. Nancy has unbelievable stamina and she smiles gaily all the time. She bubbles over with personality. The tall endgate of her 17-foot rack is a clumsy, heavy thing. Many a husky man grunts as he hefts one up into place. Yet, little Nancy never asks help, she gets her elbows under it and hoists it into place. Many a muscle-bound husky has raised his eyebrows, seeing it. Traveling in fairly rough company, Nancy retains her feminine charm and appearance. She never wears a covering, winter or summer, over her slightly graying bob. Coveralls? Oh, no! Neat green slacks, gay blouse, and a red-and-black mackinaw, hunters style. Thinking of the bitter winter winds whistling around farms and sales barns, I asked about "heavy wool longies." Huh-uh '. Dainty feminine things. "I can't stand wool next to my skin. It gets me all itchy," she said. Quit? No! During the summer, Nancy has hauled five to seven head of riding horses for customers performing at horse shows - Anita, Adair, Atlantic and other west Iowa showings. "Quit trucking? Land sakes, I'd go crazy. Why, I've been out every day for years. If I'd stay home, I'd get all caught, up in a month on the things to do here; then what in tha world would I do - "I'd go crazy just sitting at home," she said.
