PIPER, Valentine, 82y, died in Galion at home of daughter, Mrs. W. H. Price Tuesday, formerly of 1 1/2 mile from Ashland, one son of Albion and one in Covington KY. [Ashland Times & Gazette]
Memoir
On Thanksgiving Day, Valentine Piper, one of the aged landmarks of the Nankin M.E. Church, was laid to rest in the beautiful Nankin cemetery. For a few years past Father Piper had made his home in Albion, but for many years he was an honored citizen of Nankin and one of the pillars of the M.E. Church. He was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, April 22, 1822. Death overtook him on November 22, 1904, while he was making a visit at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Price of Galion, Ohio. He received his crown at the ripe age of 82 years and 7 months. His son, J.N. Piper of Albion, had gone to see him in his brief illness, expecting soon to receive him back again into his home, but the angels claimed their better right and Father Piper "was not" among man, but was at home with the Lord. He was married in 1850 to Miss Susan Clayburg, who departed this life in 1865. This union was blessed with two sons and two daughters. The two sons and one daughter, with seven children and two great-grandchildren, live to mourn their great loss. In March 1867, Mr. Piper was married to Mrs. Mary J. REote, who died in 1893. One child was born to this union, who died in infancy.
Father Piper was a member of the M.E. Church for over 61 years, and for 35 years he was a leader and stewart, and he was a faithful and useful worker for his Master. He will be greatly missed in the church and in the community, and his memory is like holy oil poured upon the heads and hearts of all who knew him.
The funeral services were held in the Nankin M.E. Church at 1 o'clock on Thanksgiving Day. The funeral sermon was preached by his pastor, Rev. E. L. Smith of West Salem, who was assisted by Rev. J. B. Ferguson of the Nankin M.E. Church. "the memory of the just is precious."
[55392] Sarah is said to be daughter of John Streeter (1738-1812) & Anna Robinson (1741-1819; m. in 1771).
