[57639] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 25 September 2008: "Robert Crossland Russ, 95, died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 15, 2006, at his home at Village Crossings. Son of Harold Bunker and Maude Crossland Russ, he was born June 12, 1911, in Bangor. He graduated from Bangor High School, Clark School in Hanover, N.H., and the University of Maine, Orono in 1934 where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. In 1938 he earned his masters degree in communication from Columbia University, New York City. During World War II, Mr. Russ served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He was in charge of a mobile communications unit, first in the Philippines and, at the end of the war, in Tokyo where he was attached to General MacArthurÂ’s staff. He observed the signing of the peace treaty with Japan from a neighboring ship in Tokyo Bay. He was in the first unit to land in Tokyo after the signing of the peace treaty. Robert married Madelene Weeks Bunker in 1940 and they raised their three sons in Cape Elizabeth, where they lived for 60 years. During his career in the insurance business; he was most recently employed by Union Mutual Life Insurance Co., now UNUM Provident. There he held many positions including, manager of group insurance, assistant to the president, agency vice president and vice president of government relations when he retired in 1973. For the next five years, he was a legislative agent for Union Mutual, Maine National Bank and Maine Life Underwriters Association. Earlier in his career he worked for Travelers Insurance of Hartford, Conn.; Connecticut General Life Insurance Co.; and John Hancock Life Insurance Co. Mr. Russ was a former director of the Catherine Morrill Day Nursery; corporator of the Portland Savings Bank; director and chairman of the New England Council; director of The Pine Tree Society; vice president for Maine of the American Life Insurance Council; chairman of the Maine Committee for Aging; delegate to the first White House Conference on Aging called by Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower; and president of the Higher Education Assistance Foundation. He was a member of a number of organizations including the Cumberland Club, Purpoodock Golf Club, United Way and the Portland Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of State Street Church, Portland. Mr. Russ was humble about his own accomplishments and was genuinely interested in the lives of everyone he met, young and old. Anyone who knew him liked him. He was a gentleman in all respects, both privately and in public. He would always walk guests, family and friends to the door of his home and stand in the driveway or front lawn until people left in their cars. He was a man of unquestionable integrity, who lived his values naturally and believed in the goodness of all people he met. 'Bob' and 'Maddy' spent summer vacations and later up to five months of the year at a special red cottage on East Penobscot Bay, Cape Rosier. Until their mid-80s, they enjoyed motoring among the islands of the bay with friends and family aboard their lobster style cruising boat, the Maddy B. In addition to his wife of 66 years, Mr. Russ is survived by his three sons and their wives, Robert C. Jr. and Joan Russ of Pittston, Joel and Carolyn Russ of Cape Elizabeth and Stephen and Judi Russ of Hallowell; five grandchildren, Andrew and his wife, Angela Russ, of Damariscotta, Matthew Russ and his fiance, K.C. Ford, of Waterville, Abel and Nathaniel Russ of Portland and Alexie Russ of Brunswick; and three great-grandchildren, Samuel, Madelene and Nicholas of Damariscotta."
