[57638] Ruth's obituary: "Rockland - Ruth Bunker Ellis, 84, died unexpectedly, Sunday, April 15, 2007 at her Jameson Point home. Born September 2, 1922, in Calais, Maine she was the daughter of Willard Bunker, MD and Kate Weeks Bunker. Her childhood was spent in Calais and in the nearby village of Red Beach where she lived with her parents and two older sisters. She began her education at Oak Grove High School, later transferring to and graduating from Ricker High School. Following graduation, Ruth studied Sociology at University of Maine, Orono. Ruth met her husband, Edward M. Ellis of York, Maine, while at U of M when he tipped his chair back and literally fell onto her desk. The two married June 2, 1943 in Orono. They resided there for one year before Mr. Ellis joined the Marines Corps and served in World War II in the Pacific Theater. Upon her husband's return from the war, the couple moved to York where they built their home and raised their family. Although her education was in sociology, Ruth enjoyed working beside her husband at the family insurance agency, The Ellis Agency in York. In 1968 Ruth began working at York Hospital where she established the first social work program. A lover of the sea, Mrs. Ellis enjoyed sailing up and down the coast of Maine with her husband and many dear friends. Upon Mr. Ellis' death, Mrs. Ellis moved to Rockland where she was very active as a volunteer at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in the Escort Department. She had a generous spirit and enjoyed doing things for others. She was the first to welcome new neighbors to the Jameson Point community with a homemade casserole and loved entertaining friends and family in her home. Nature conservation and enjoying the outdoors was particularly important to her. She worked passionately for the preservation of Maine lighthouses, and the health of Rockland Harbor. With a pair of binoculars always at the ready, Mrs. Ellis kept a watchful eye on Rockland Harbor from her living room, assisting the Coast Guard on more than one occasion. She dedicated a granite bench to her husband's memory and planted beach roses at the base of the Rockland Breakwater; a gentle suggestion to passersby to 'rest and be thankful.' Mrs. Ellis was a friend to all animal 'creatures', which included a faithful (and well-fed) seagull and a pair of nesting osprey in her backyard. She was known in Rockland as the 'lady with the golden retriever.' She could often be seen with her dog 'Duffy' on the breakwater or greeting the schooner 'Lewis R. French' as it arrived in port. She also took 'Duffy' to local nursing homes to visit patients. Ruth was also an avid traveler. In the 1980s she toured such far flung destinations as Iceland, Greenland, the Galapagos Islands, Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. Big Band music was another of Ruth's passions. She rarely missed a Sunday evening dance concert with Stan Cattell's Down East Jazz Society at the Samoset Resort. Predeceased by her husband, Ruth is survived by two sisters Madelyn Russ of Cape Elizabeth, Katherine Pew of Brunswick; her three children, Timothy Bunker Ellis of Cape Neddick, Kate Wicker and her husband Larry of York Beach, Marcia Stewart and her husband John of South Bristol; seven grandchildren, Christine Roggenbusch and her husband Robert of Freemont, California, Benjamin Bunker Ellis and his wife Jennifer of Cape Neddick, Richmond Wicker of York Beach, Matthew Wicker of Charlestown, Massachusetts, Rebecca Wicker and her fiancee Vince Salemi of Danbury, Connecticut, Erica Stewart and her husband Lance Baldwin of Washington, D.C., Samuel C. Stewart of Round Pond; and seven great-grandchildren Zachary, Jacob and Noah of Freemont, California, Benjamin, Tressa and Christine of Cape Neddick, and Elias Baldwin of Washington, D.C."
[58008] Susannah is said to be daughter of Leonard Cooper (1707-1785) & Sarah Platts (1710-1794; m. 26 June 1729 in Rowley, Essex Co., MA).

[2383] Note that the Encyclopaedia Britannica (1956, 21:628) states that Ida is daughter of Hermann, a Fraconian noble, who became Duke of Swabia in 926 and who married the widow of Burkhard (who became Duke of Swabia in 917 and died in 926)! http://www.free-definition.com/Franconia.html offers: "Franconia (German, Franken), a region in Germany now part of Bavaria. The area was the seat of the Holy Roman Emperors, and is considered one of the five original stem duchies that made up the Holy Roman Empire. Throughout the Middle Ages and into the Early Modern period, much of Upper Franconia, especially those areas that had once been parts of Thuringia, fell under the control of the Bishop of Bamberg, the Bishop of Würzburg, and the Abbot of Fulda."

[29997] "The Selinsgrove Times-Tribune [Selinsgrove, PA], 23 November 1933," p. 1: "George D. Witmer, 49, died a beautiful death last evening, immediately after leading, with his rich baritone vcice, a group of friends in the singing of 'Smiles'. Members of the local Masonic Lodge, Lafayette No. 194, and their wives, numbering more than 200 persons, assembled in the basement of the First Lutheran Church for dinner and a social evening. After Mr. Witmer had led the singing he took his seat at the banquet table beside his wife and leaning over her shoulder, as if to speak to her, expired. He was immediately carried from the banquet hall to the Sunday school room on the floor above, where physicians pronounced him dead. Mr. Witmer had been suffering with indigestion for several days, but was net considered seriously ill. An acute attack of that ailment is attributed as the cause of his death. George D. Witmer was born at Salem, April 4, 1885, the son of the late George Miller Witmer and his widow, Mrs. Sarah Amelia Moyer Witmer, of Salem. After attending the Salem public schools he was graduated from Susquehanna University School of Business in the class of 1906. He was one of Susquehanna's greatest football players. Mr. Witmer was then associated with his father in conducting a store at Salem and the management of lhe George M. Witmer Sons Mill, at Clifford. Mr. Witmer was possessed with a baritone voice, the cultivation of which he fondly hoped for. In 1911 he saw an advertisement in a Philadelphia newspaper for untrained voices to join the great chorus of the Metropolitan Opera Company, in Philadelphia, where special training would be given. Mr. Witmer seized that opportunity, went to Philadelphia and was one of 16 chosen by Oscar Hammerstein from 900 applicants. After a year's study with the Metropolitan Opera Company he returned to Salem, due to the illness of his father, and had charge of the Witmer business activities. During the World War he was appointed by the United States Government as a flour mill inspector, in which capacity he traveled over much of the United States. He held this position until that line of endeavor was abandoned after the Armistice. Four years ago Mr. Witmer was appointed receiver for the Sunbury and Selinsgrove Electric Railway Company, which position he held at the time of his unexpected death. He was a director in the Snyder County Trust Company since organisation of the institution. Mr. Witmer was also a member of the borough council. Mr. Witmer was married November 21, 1912, to Miss Maude Isabelle Runkle, of Middleburg. Day before yesterday they celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Witmer resided at Middleburg after their marriage until 11 years ago, when they removed to Selinsgrove. Brief services will be held at the late residence, 221 Orange street, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, following which the cortege will move to Salem Reformed Church. There in the edifice where the deceased worshiped since a boy, and where his family for generations before him did likewise, services will be conducted by tJie pastor, Rev. Herman G. Snyder, of Middleburg, and Rev. Earl G. Kline, pastor of St. Paul's Reformed. Church, Selinsgrove. Interment will be in the Union cemetery, Selinsgrove, with the last rites of the Masonic Order. George D. Witmer is survived by his widow, one son, George D. Witmer, Jr., a senior in the Selinsgrove High School; one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Witmer, a student of the 6th grade in the local schools; his mother, Mrs. George M. Witmer, of Salem, and the following brothers and sisters: Miss Katherine Witmer, of Salem; Mrs. Arthur C. Harris, of Gordon; Ralph Witmer, of West Walnut street; Calvin Witmer, of Snyder street, Mrs. J. H. Kuster, of North Orange street. George Witmer always smiled and always sang. He will be remembered for both, as well as his many other fine attributes."
