[52692] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 3 October 2012: "Brooklin - Ethel Emma (Tapley) Howard Tandy, also known as Howie, 86, passed away peacefully, Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 at the Island Nursing Home, Deer Isle. Ethel was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Bucksport, to William R. and Velma (Hawes) Tapley. Ethel grew up in Brooksville with her four brothers, which we know helped give her the strength and spunk that she carried with her to the very end. At a young age she took on many jobs including barn chores, raking blueberries, and working in the fish factory. Eventually she cleaned cottages and waited tables. In 1944, she graduated from Brooksville High School and two years later married Richard Howard Jr. and began her life as a homemaker, which she loved dearly. In 1957, the family, now with two daughters, settled in Brooklin. Ethel was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was well known as a hard worker in which she took great pride; working as cook, housekeeper, chauffeur and caregiver to many local, as well as summer residents. Most notable was the late Mr. E.B .White for whom she worked for over 12 years. She also collected donations for numerous charities, and was always ready to help those in need; whether in her own community or across the state. Ethel was also known for her kind smile, a positive attitude and her infectious giggle. She enjoyed yard sales, decorating, Sunday rides, reading the daily news and having lunch with friends and neighbors on Thursdays. But most of all she loved and enjoyed spending time with her family. She is survived by daughter, Joanne H. Preble Brewer and husband, Andy, of Canaan; stepsons, Glenn Tandy and wife, Teresa, of Massachusetts, Richard Tandy and wife, Dee, and John Tandy and wife, Donna, both of New York; grandchildren, Elizabeth Day Nangle and husband, Tim, of Windham, Jessica Preble Landry and husband, Derek, of Waterville, and Andrew J. Preble of New York; eight step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, Sydney of Windham, Julian and Keira of Waterville; brother, Robert Tapley and wife, Marilyn, of Penobscot; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Richard Howard Jr., and her husband of 12 years, John 'Jack' Tandy; daughter, Donna (Howard) Day; and brothers, Billy, John and Paul Tapley."
