Burton is son of John S. Gilman and Esther E. Bullard. Burton graduated in 1891 from Dartmouth College. At his death he was an odained minister of the Vermont Congregational Conference.
"The Barre Daily Times [Barre, Vermont], 22 October 1920," p. 1: "Westminster, Mass., Oct. 22. Rev. Burton S. Gilman, 56, died suddenly on Wednesday while driving an automobile on Bacon street. It is believed that Mr. Gilman suffered an attack of heart failure. The machine left the road and struck a tree. Rev. Mr. Gilman had been actively engaged as a farmer since last March when he retired after serving for 23 years as pastor of the First Congregational church in Gardner. Wednesday morning he covered his route in Gardner for the delivery of milk and cream and was returning home. Charles Mansfield and Wallace Flagg who were working on the highway, went to the scene immediately. Dr. George Mossman was summoned, but Mr. Gilman was dead when he arrived. Rev. Mr. Gilman was a native of Randolph, Vt. Besides his wife, who was Miss Nellie Osgood of Gardner, he leaves three daughters, Miss Ruth Gilman, a nurse at the Children's hospital, Boston, Miss Esther Gilman of Gardner and Miss Elizabeth Gilman of Westminster, a student at Mt. Holyoke college, and two brothers living at Randolph, Vt."
