[4923] The countship was seated at Brienne-le-Chateau, a town in northeastern France (26 miles NE of Troyes). The countship thrived under the Carolingian dynasty. "In the 10th century it was captured by two adventurers named Engilbert and Gobert, and from the first of these sprang the noble house of Brienne, which played an important part in history of the 13th century." - Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956, 4:145. The ancestry shown here is NOT VERIFIED and probably NOT valid. William is possibly the immigrant ancestor of the family. He is buried, as is Mary his widow, in Old North Cemetery, Truro, MA. [A Jo. Dyer, age 28, is on a list of those to be transported to New England on the "Christian" 16 March 1634 - "Result of Some Researches Among the British Archives for Information Relative to the Founders of New England," Samuel G. Drake.]
{Many have claimed WITHOUT PROOF that William is a son of William the immigrant who was born in England and came to Sheepscott, ME (then in MA). [as in "Dyer Family History from England to America, 1600's to 1980," compiled and printed by Watson B. Dyar, 607 N. College St., Cedartown, GA 30125.] "Ames Ancestry - Europe to Maine," Agnes H. Ames (Brewer, ME, 1979), states "The Dyer family is an ancient one in Somerset County, England. Some of them were titled. The Dyer family was severely persecuted by King James and was especially condemned for loyalty to Charles I. William Dyer was apparently the immigrant ancestor. In 1662 he was living on 600 A. on Dyer's Neck, Sheepscot, now Newcastle and Wiscasset, on land sold him by the Indians on Feb. 11, 1662 and March 20, 1664. He was associate on the court of General Sessions, wealthy and prominent until the Indian attacks of 1676 drove him away. That year he was in Scituate, having left behind 56 head of cattle and 30 swine. A deposition by his sons states that he returned to Sheepscot and was killed by the Indians in August 1689." - she gives this William as the FATHER of "Dr. William Dyer" who "when Truro was incorporated on July 16, 1709...was a proprietor. In 1710 he was one of the 20 owners of cattle of a large Danish breed, yellow in color, which were brought over by Francis Small." (p. 34). - but there is NO proof and this link is very doubtful.}
"The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island," John Osborne Austin (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1969), p. 291 attributes a William (b. 1705) to Samuel Dyer, son of William. http://www.plumdigital.com/2_webcards/wc46/wc46_430.html. [51487] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 10 November 2015": "Anacortes, Wash. - Direct descendant of 1621 colonists in Maine, Virginia Lewis was a beauty queen who made others shine. Virginia Olive Lewis was one of 21 children born to Mabel (Strout) Whalen and Cecil L. Whalen, one in a direct line that began with the Strout family arriving from Germany in 1621. Virginia was a spirited and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a natural beauty. In 1947, she won the Apple Blossom Queen contest in Bath, Maine, and later went on to become a cosmetologist in Seattle, where wealthy clientele waited days for an opening with the saucy and kind-hearted Virginia at Bon Marche and Grosvenor House in Seattle during their glamorous 1960s heydays. She passed away on Aug. 3, 2015, in Anacortes, Wash., at the age of 86. Born on March 19, 1929, Virginia attended school in Sullivan and married John Lewis (87) on April 13, 1946, at Elm Street Baptist Church in Bath, Maine. In 1956, John, Virginia and their two children moved to Seattle, Wash., where Virginia, a 1950s devotee of Hollywood elegance and Marilyn Monroe, and an independent woman, devoted herself to a new career path. Graduating from West Seattle Beauty College in the 1960s, she was selected to work with the famed Vidal Sassoon at a special show in Seattle. Her loyal clientele spanned both the East and the West Coast. Virginia worked from the age of 14 to well into her 70s. After 40 years as a cosmetologist, Virginia and her husband of 70 years retired in 1989 and began wintering in Anacortes and summering in Maine. Aside from her husband, Virginia was greatly loved by many family members and dear friends, on both the West and East Coast. Her immediate survivors include her daughter Gretchen Jankauskas-Stewart (husband Douglas Stewart) of Shelton, Wash.; her son Bruce A. Lewis (wife Teresa Kasch-Lewis) of Anacortes; granddaughter Jessica Blischke of Bend, Ore.; granddaughter Jennille Jankauskas of Bellevue, Wash.; grandson Joseph Lewis of Burlington, Wash.; grandson John Lewis of Anacortes; and granddaughter Ashley Lewis stationed at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. She also leaves six great-grandchildren."
