[27192] http://www.chadbourne.org/Gen4.htm states that Tabitha "died presumably before her husband's third marriage circa 1710; married as his second wife 10 Feb 1700 Rowland Jenkins, a fisherman of Dover. He had married first Experience Heard and married third before July 1710 Mary Morgrage (LND, 377). Rowland and Mary are thoroughly documented in MPC V:149-154 for a variety of trespasses, including stealing. The presentation of this family by Stackpole in his 'Old Kittery' is seriously flawed."
Isaac Paullin(s) served in Capt. Lochry's Company of Rangers in the Westmoreland County Militia during the War for Independence - see record of cancelled certificate for Depreciation Pay in "PA Archives, 5th Series," IV:451; the certificate was for 200 acres of land on the frontier, presumably in Butler County (which was being laid out for such claims in the final years of the 18th century). Isaac served as a Private, thus he was entitled to one certificate. He is buried "down in the woods" in the White Oak Cemetery, Fairview Twp., Butler Co., PA (this was part of Donegal Twp. until 1854). {-per Susan Hepler of Butler, Pa, 21 July 1989} A few feet away are the graves of Georg Jacob Hepler (1744-1808) and wife Elizabethe (1745-1809).
David Eckberg reported 12/96 that Don Bailey had visited Guile and Ruth Paullin of Winterset, IA in 1985 and had transcribed from an old "Polin" family Bible, perhaps that of Isaac (Sr.), these names, perhaps his children: John (b. 3 July 1781), Harry or Nancy (indistinct) (2 March 1782), William (15 June 1785), Mary (3 March 1788), Isaac (?)(1790) and William (15 June 1795).
Isaac Paullin is listed in the Septennial census in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland Co., PA in 1786 and in 1787 as Isaac Polans is in this town on the Tax and Exoneration roll.
[Broderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree 3249 shows an Isaac Pollins [sic] as father of Mary Pollins, b. 8 March 1781 in Armstrong Co., PA, d. 8 Aug 1842 in Sugar Creek, Armstrong Co., PA, m. Jacob Hepler, Jr. (b. 1 July 1777 in Armstrong Co., PA, d. 8 June 1864 in Sugar Creek, PA), and lists their descendants. Note: Family Tree Maker CD-ROM files require verification! This line connects with the Hepler Family History referenced under Elizabeth Hepler, wife of Isaac (Jr.) Paullin.]
There is a Paullin family of Anglo Saxon origin before the year 1100 and the surname appears first in the ancient records in Staffordshire. "Surnames of the United Kingdom," Henry Harrison (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1969), II:63 reports the surname is from the French "Paulin" (with a diminuitive suffix), as in Paulin de Basset in the "Hundred Rolls, 1274".
The IGI index (LDS Church) includes the following of this surname prior to 1800:
1. Isaac POULAIN - International Genealogical Index/British Isles
Christening: 22 Nov 1724 London, Threadneedle Street French Huguenot, London, England
2. Isaac POULIN - International Genealogical Index/British Isles
Christening: 22 Jan 1721 London, Threadneedle Street French Huguenot, London, England
3. Isaac POLLEN - International Genealogical Index/British Isles
Christening: 2 Apr 1766 Dover, Saint James The Apostle, Kent, England
4. Isaac POULAIN - International Genealogical Index/British Isles
Christening: 5 Dec 1697 Canterbury, Walloon or Strangers Church, Kent, England
5. Isaac POULAIN - International Genealogical Index/British Isles
Marriage: 1 Jan 1695 Canterbury, Wallson, Kent, England
6. Isaac PAULIN - International Genealogical Index/British Isles
Christening: 8 Dec 1686 Chelsea, Saint Luke, London, England
There does not seem to be any relationship to the Pawling family in eastern PA in the 18th century, but there was an Isaac in this family, mentioned in this description of a German Lutheran church in Berks Co.: "FOREST, AKA FORREST OR PLOW: formed in late 1760s in Robeson Twp. for Lutherans. Some records are extant from 1767 onward. It appears Rev. William Kurtz was the first pastor, but in 1779 a schoolmaster, George Butler, began preaching and conducting sacraments, and in 1782 Isaac Pawling, an Episcopalian, conducted services. Following that Traugott Illing served as pastor. In 1808 a program to build a new church got underway, and after 1810 it became a union church shared by the Reformed" (now UCC); the union was dissolved in 1956. - Charles H. Glatfelter, "Pastors and People: German Lutheran and Reformed Churches in the Pennsylvania Field, 1717-1793," Vol.I (Breinigsville, PA: PA German Society, 1980).
"Early History of Western Pennsylvania" (Laughlintown, PA: Southwest Pennsylvania Genealogical Services, 1989), p. 188 mentions a Captain Paulin among officers engaged in Lord Dunmore's War of 1774 in the upper Ohio River valley west of Pittsburgh, PA.
"Pennsylvania Marriages" on Family Tree Maker's CD 193 lists the marriage of "Whitlock Paullin" and Mary Smith in Dec, 1747. This is the only person of this spelling of the surname in the marriage listings. {Curious is the marriage of Jacob Paullin of Salem, NJ with Rebeccah Ware 22 Sept 1762 - a John Jewell, Jr. of Hunterdon, NJ m. Sarah Warford 7 Nov 1769 - the Jewell and Paullin lines joined in Ohio.}
