John was a laborer and farmer most of his life and as a young man worked for Dr. George Kurtz of Young Township, who was an old friend of his father's. John was married on 20 October 1881 to Mary Ellen "Ella" Barnett, daughter of Punxsutawney pioneers David Barnett and Mary Elizabeth Dunmire. They began their lives together in Young Township but shortly after purchased property near Grange in Perry Township where they remained the rest of their lives. They were the parents of sixteen children, 12 of whom survived. Both John and Ella were life long members of the German Reformed Church and joined with the St. John's Reformed Church of Perry as adults. John passed away at home in Perry Township at the age of 61."
