The 5 July 1870 federal census at Amherst, Hancock Co., ME lists Isaiah (age 61, farmer), Lucy B. (49), Justin P. (28, laborer), Perley (24, laborer), George B. (17, Lydia A. (14), Adda (10), Bertie (6) abd Guy C, (3). The next family, obviously the immediate neighbors, is that of George F. Archer [Lucy's brother] with wife and children.
Historian Mark E. Honey wrote in "The Ellsworth American," 1 July 2010, Section 3, p. 3: "Isaiah Haynes was born in Trenton Aug. 14, 1808, the son of Perley Haynes and Jane Hopkins. His father was born in Haverhill, Mass., and according to family legend, served as a drummer boy at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Family legend also has it that Perley was kin to Gen. Israel Putnam, and that he came to Trenton as a goldsmith.
"Isaiah Haynes moved northward along the West Branch of the Union River, to Amherst, where he answered the call of the tall pine. He purchased a lot in western Amherst, thorugh which the brook that bears his name ran. He married Lucy Archer in 1837, and as his father before him, bore 13 children. Isaiah Haynes became prominent in Amherst, serving as town clerk, highway surveyor, selectman, collector of taxes and justice of the peace.
"His was a life of incredibly hard work, as he peeled hemlock bark for the tannery, worked as an ox teamster and was a farmer and lumberman. He took great pride in his accomplishments, and great care to keep his homestead and buildings in good repair. He worked up until the last two months of his life, crossing over Sept. 23, 1881, at 73 years. His wife, Lucy, who had labored beside him all those years of married life, lived until 1892 and died at 71. Both are buried in the Tannery Loop Cemetery, Amherst.
"Isaiah Haynes met with great success as a pioneer, but this success simply could not be achieved by the next generation. Sons Bert and Guy became well-known woodsmen, trappers and guides, and Bert would become a legendary guide in the Moosehead Lake region. Bert Haynes died in May 1927 while crossing Jo Mary Lake with a client. He lies buried in Great Pond."
