[5427] Compton's Encyclopedia (via America Online, 1995): "George I (born 1660, ruled 1714-27). When Queen Anne died in 1714, George Louis took the British throne. He had been since 1698 the elector of Hanover, a north German state. His mother, Sophia, was a granddaughter of James I of the English Stuart line. The Act of Settlement in 1701 had barred Roman Catholics from the throne, and George was the closest Protestant heir (see Glorious Revolution). George was 54 years old when he became king. He was much more interested in Hanover, which he continued to rule, than in Britain. Also, since he spoke only German, he left the running of Britain to his ministers. Sir Robert Walpole headed the cabinet in the king's place, and thus in effect he became Britain's first prime minister (see Cabinet Government; Walpole Family). Before George came to England he had divorced his wife, Sophia Dorothea, for misconduct. She was imprisoned until her death in 1726. Two children were born of their marriage, a son and a daughter. Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Edward (Melody) McCrory of Hayesville; two grandsons; and a brother, Carl (Gloria) Leidigh of Seattle, Wash."
