[58051] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 25 October 2024: "Mount Desert and Ambajejus Lake - Robert 'Bobby' L. Mitchell Sr., 63, of Mount Desert and Ambajejus Lake, passed away unexpectedly on October 18, 2024. Bobby was a much beloved husband to Jennifer; father to Robert Jr. 'Brett' and Caroline 'Calli' and her partner, Son Nguyen; and son-in-law to Sheila Smallidge. Bob grew up in Southwest Harbor and graduated from Mount Desert Island High School in 1980. Though classmates at MDIHS, Bobby and Jennifer really met after high school and married in 1985. Bob and Jen celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary on September 15th. Bobby's friends - both life long and new - enjoyed a fun loving, compassionate person who was always there to lend a hand or an ear. He would literally give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Bob had a way of making everyone he encountered feel important. Always quick to make friends, he had connections with folks from every walk of life. He was always the chief entertainment officer with kids and friends whether boating, jet skiing, tubing, snowmobiling, grooming, racing stock cars, no matter what he wanted everyone to be happy. He was a caretaker, one who wanted to make sure his friends and family were safe and happy. He did have a love for speed - motorcycles, snowmobiles, boats, stock cars, etc. Over the years he drag raced motorcycles, snowmobiles and built and raced his late model sportsman stock car. Bob could fix anything and could run any piece of equipment put in front of him. Among his favorite pastimes was grooming the trails around camp - lovingly named ITS B.O.B. He was in the midst of building what he called his wife's tiny home for fun, though at almost 3000 square feet was in truth their dream home, completely custom designed and built with their own hands. He was predeceased by his parents, Gardner and Janet Mitchell; and his father-in-law, Peter Smallidge. He is survived by his family listed above; as well as his sister, Pamela and her husband, Peter Smith, and their children; as well as nephew, Peter Baylor Harris. While he loved his family deeply - he also loved his friends. If you were lucky enough to be one you knew how deeply he cared for you. Bobby loved his children solemnly and was very involved in their lives from infants on up. He was an avid sports fan for Brett and Calli - attending practices, sometimes coaching and attending their games from T-Ball on up to college basketball. Bobby, along with the respective child, was instrumental in building the batting cages at MDI High School on the baseball and softball fields. As a family they spent nearly every weekend at camp. This involved hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, boating and 'projects.' He also helped Brett and Calli when they were lobstering - neither had a driver's license when they started so he was the chief trap transporter and went aboard with them fishing too. These were some of his most loved moments. He recently commented that he and Jennifer were so lucky to have two great kids. Despite Bob's (aka Bobster, Big Hoss) outward happiness he was haunted by persistent emotional distress from childhood. He hid it well but could never get away from it. Most did not know of this and that makes losing him that much more difficult. Love your family and friends with all your might and always say I love you ... Bobby did."
