Virginia Horler notes:
Frederick Robie Palmer was likely named after Frederick Robie, Governor of Maine from 1882 to 1886.
1910 Census Woodland, Whatcom, Washington ED 371 page 103: Frederick Palmer (25) self and parents born in Maine, school teacher; also boarding at same home was Clara Miller (25) born in Michigan, school teacher.
12 Sep 1918 Frederick Robie Palmer, age 33, born 7 April 1885, registered for the draft of the US Military. He lived at 1004 High St., in Bellingham, Whatcom, WA, was a school principal at the Larrabee School in Bellingham. He was married to Clara M. Palmer who lived at the same address. Medium height, brown hair, brown eyes. (46-1-1 C No. A667)
1920 Census Bellingham, Whatcom, WA ED 283 page 220B: Frederick R. Palmer (34) public school teacher; Clara M. (35); Zena E. (8); H. Louise (7); Coburn T. (5); and Mary Delia 1-11/12. All children born in Washington.
1930 Census Palo Alto, Santa Clara, CA ED 24 page 187A: Frederick R. Palmer (44) married at 25, principal of a public school; Clara M. (45); Zena E. (18); Harriet L. (17); Coburn T. (15); Frederick H. (14) and Mary D. (12). They lived at 238R Colorado Street in Palo Alto in a house valued at $5,000.
In 1930 widow Bertha F. Palmer lived in Los Gatos, not far from Palo Alto, and worked as a housekeeper. He married Clara Hampson Miller, married 2 Aug 1910 in Vancouver, BC, Canada, b. 20 Jun 1884 in Battle Creek, Calhoun, Michigan, (daughter of Julius Fredrickson Heileman Miller and Mary Osborn) d. 11 Dec 1967 in Santa Clara County, CA.
Children:
i. Zena Elizabeth Palmer, b. 28 May 1911 in Bellingham, Whatcom, WA, d. 29 Mar 1975 in Mendocino County, CA. She married Unknown Rodni.
ii. Harriet Louise Palmer, b. 23 Jun 1912 in Bellingham, Whatcom, WA. She married Ernest Albert Tarr, married 8 Feb 1936 in Palo Alto, Santa Clara, CA, b. 19 Jun 1911 in Sparks, Washoe, NV.
iii. Coburn Tremain Palmer, b. 5 Jun 1914 in Bellingham, Whatcom, WA, d. 15 Mar 1976 in San Mateo County, CA.
iv. Frederick Heileman Palmer, b. 29 Jul 1916 in Bellingham, Whatcom, WA.
v. Mary Delia Palmer b. 7 Feb 1918.
She is John's second wife. Rod Lyall offered via email 6 Dec 2008:
"One of the bugbears of genealogy is the tendency for mistakes to go on being perpetuated as researchers take over others information, often originating in printed sources which are assumed to be correct.
"Like you, my ancestors include Geneviève Pétau (d. 6.12.1643), who married John Gordon in 1594. It is frequently claimed that she was the daughter of Gideon (Gédéon) Pétau, lord of Maule (actually Maulette). This has long seemed to me to be unlikely given the chronology, and last week I gave myself a long-projected trip to the Archives departmentales of Loiret, in Orléans, where the Pétau family was mostly based in the sixteenth century, and of Yvelines, in Montigny-le-Bretonneux. Maulette is in Yvelines.
"Since Geneviève Pétau married in 1594, she cannot have been born much after 1570. The most important result of this expedition was establishing that the sieur de Maulette at this period was François Pétau (d. before 18 July 1584), the son of Nicolas Pétau (d. before 8 July 1553) and Anne Flamberge, and of Isabelle Barthomier, the daughter of Jean Barthomier, seigneur dOlivet, and Geneviève Brachet. It seems pretty certain that Gédéon Pétau, the first of three successive lords of Maulette of that name, who held the title in 1595 and who was dead by 2 July 1614, was Geneviève Pétaus brother (and thus the son of François), rather than her brother. It seems logical to suppose that Geneviève was named for her maternal grandmother.
"The evidence for all this is contained in a collection of Pétau de Maulette family papers in the AD des Yvelines (J 3491/1); the earliest document I found referring to François Pétau as lord of Maulette is dated 29 November 1575 and the latest 19 July 1582, which also describes him as conseiller du Roy nostre sire en sa court de parlement de Bretagne, an office which Genevièves father is known to have held."
