[33734] Samuel is son of Dominiscus Jordan (killed by Native Americans in Spurwink Maine 10 Aug 1703 ) and Hannah Tristram. His memorial in http://www.findagrave.com offers: "Samuel built his home in 1713 in the cove so that people could land in boats to purchase items from the Jordan Store. It was a major trade station.Very prominent in promoting the growth of Biddeford. His home was a fortress against the Indians that were a constant threat. He had a large stone wall that surrounded the house. He was captured by the Indians and held for many years. He learned their customs and language and was used as an interpreter. The British Government was so grateful for all his help with the Indians that in 1742 they placed a large slate over his grave. It lay horizontal on a bed of bricks. In the center was a heart of a different color bearing his name, birth and death. Later when the slate disintigrated, the heart was removed to Jordan Farm for safekeeping. This home was remodeled in 1902 by Harry Jordan Tatterson. He said the wood was so hard nails would not penetrate it. The original door was still in use and the front rooms were the same. When the slate was placed on the grave of Samuel they listed him opposite the Old Jordan home and Oak Grove on Pool Rd." See "Genealogical and Family History of the State of Maine, Volume 1,' Henry Sweetser Burrage & Albert Roscoe Stubbs (Lewis Historical Publishing Co., 1909), p. 123.
[30718] AKA Johann Daniel Maurer. Find A Grave Memorial 13140259 offers: "Revolutionary War Soldier - Private (4th Class), 3rd Battalion, 1st Company, Northampton County Militia. Baptized: 16 May 1749, Herren-Sulzbach, Kusel, Rheinhessen-Pfalz, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Parents: Johan Heinrich Maurer and Maria Katharina Erhardt." Some postings in Ancestry.com state Daniel was b. in Grumbach, Germany. Ancestry.com offers: "Maurer Name Meaning - German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): occupational name for a builder of walls of stone or brick, from an agent derivative of Middle High German mure, German Mauer 'wall' (from Latin murus 'wall', especially a city wall). In the Middle Ages the majority of dwellings were built of wood (or lath and plaster), and this term would have specifically denoted someone employed in building defensive walls, castles, churches, and other public buildings."
