[54065] Grace is daughter of Orson Brown (b. in 1885) & Mary Avery (b. in 1884; m. 6 November 1909 in Caribou, Aroostook Co., ME). "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 22 March 2009: "Grace Brown Knox Littlefield died March 21, 2009, at Harbor Hill, Belfast. She was 91 years of age. Grace was born March 30, 1917, in Stockton Springs, the daughter of Captain Orison and Mary (Avery) Brown. Grace married Charles R. Knox of Searsport and had two daughters, Charlene Knox Farris, who followed her mother into the teaching profession, and Natalie Grace Knox, who has had a successful career in radio. Grace graduated from Stockton Springs High School in 1934. In 1937 she graduated from Eastern State Normal School, Castine. In 1957 she completed two years at the University of Maine, Orono, and received her Bachelor of Science degree. Mrs. Knox, as she was lovingly known by so many children, taught elementary school, mostly first grade, for 36 years in the towns of Thorndike, Kittery and Searsport. She loved teaching and often said, 'Id do it all over again!' She was a member of a number of organizations including the national, State and County Retired Teachers Associations, Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and Carver Memorial Library Association and Jolly Neighbors Community Club of Brooks. She was a lifetime member of Searsport Historical Society and Primrose Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, was a deaconess, Sunday school and Bible school teacher and longtime member of First Congregation Church of Searsport. Playing bridge, traveling, walking, crossword puzzles and dancing to music of the 30s and 40s were all pastimes that Grace enjoyed. Many people admired the smile that she always seemed to have on her face. She was, for 20 years, a winter resident of Clearwater, Fla., and lived for more than 50 years in her home on Steamboat Avenue, Searsport, overlooking Penobscot Bay. Grace loved a verse of meditation called 'The Essence of Success.' 'Successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of children, who leaves the world better than they found it, who has never lacked appreciation for the earths beauty, and who never failed to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves.' Grace was predeceased by her first husband, Charles R. Knox; her second husband, Maj. Chester J. Littlefield, U.S. Army; and a sister, Edna Brown Martin. She is survived by two children: daughter, Charlene Knox Farris and her husband, Rodney A. Farris, of Searsport and daughter, Natalie Grace Knox of Ellsworth; stepchildren, John R. Littlefield and Jean Littlefield Waller and her husband, Dan, and their daughter, Ashley Waller, all of Largo, Fla.; grandson, Jason A. Farris; two great-grandsons, Matthew A. and Donovan M. Farris of Pittston; as well as several nieces and nephews. Grace is also survived by dear friends, Barbara and Pete Pearson, Edward Bagley, and Edmund, Leanne and Megan Marshall, all of Searsport and Barbara Clements Sanborn and Myrtle Fletcher of Belfast. At her request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service for Grace. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Searsport."
