He married Sophia Briner, daughter of Frederick Briner and Anna Maria Reicheldoerfler, 15 December 1839 in Wayne County, Ohio. Augustus died 22 August 1888 in Huntington County, Indiana while visiting relatives. He lived in South Bend, Indiana and his body was taken back there for burial. Augustus Freehafer and his wife, Sophia Briner, had six known children: Lydia Freehafer married Samuel Shock, Catherine 'Kate' Freehafer married Peter Newman, George W. Freehafer married Sarah J. Steffey, John H. Freehafer married Sarah Catherine Ritchie, Mary E. Freehafer married George C. Fisher and Joseph Briner Freehafer married Alice Wright."

He is survived by his children, Rosemarie E. Webster of Verona Island, Thomas H. Herbest of Prospect, Shawn Porter and his wife, Sandy, of Bucksport, Richard T. Herbest of Brewer, and Frederick E. Herbest and his wife, Melissa, of Prospect; one brother, Eugene Herbest of South Berwick; one sister, Rebecca Maguire of Prospect; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Beulah P. Herbest; son, Richard Jr.; daughter, Debbie Valenoti; and two brothers, Milton and Frederick Herbest."
