[49138] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 22 September 1987, p. 10: "Ellsworth - Funeral services for William Silsby, Sr., 85, prominent Ellsworth civic leader, former president of the Maine Bar Association, and former legislator and judge, will be held at the First Congregational Church here Tuesday afternoon. Silsby died at a Bangor hospital Saturday, Last April the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce honored Silsby with its Top Drawer Award as one who had made a substantial contribution to the improvement of Ellsworth as well as Hancock County and the State of Maine. In accepting the award the popular retired judge credited his success, 'If I have been successful' to 'the people. They have helped me get over the hump. The people elected me to the Legislature The people supported my appointment to the Superior Court.' Upon his retirement from the bench in 1972 after 11 years as a Superior Court judge, Silsby was honored by lawyers and judges at a banquet in Bucksport. He told colleagues that his state and his home county of Hancock had 'given me everything I've ever asked for.' Elected to the Legislature in 1947, Silsby served a term as speaker of the House before getting elected to the Senate in 1953, where he served for six years and then became a member of the Governor's Executive Council. In 1961 the practicing Ellsworth attorney was appointed to the Superior Court. retiring from the bench in 1972, His efforts to establish the Maine State Ferry Service while he was active in politics resulted in the naming of a Penobscot Bay ferry after him in 1958. He was president of the Union River Electric Cooperative; owner and director of the Union River Telephone Co,; and a former director of the Northeast Packing Co. He was a 50-year member of the Masons, was active in numerous civic organizations, and was the senior member and founder of the Silsby & Silsby law firm in Ellsworth. Among survivors in addition to his wife, Myrle, are two sons, a daughter and two sisters." "Along the Union River," Connee Jellison (Charleston, SC: Arcadia Publishing, 1997), p. 79 provides a photo of William.
