[3691] Avesnes is capital of an arrondissement in the department of Nord, north France, founded in the 11th century. It was a countship which in the 15th century passed to the House of Burgundy and later to the Hapsburgs. Wederic II the Bearded [Wedric, Waudru, Wederik, Wéry], lord of Avesnes, superintendent of Tournai and presumably Leuze (mentioned 1034-1066) is son of Wederic I, lord of Avesnes, Condé and Leuze (b. ca. 1020, d. ca. 1065). Ray Gurganus' web site, www.gurganus.org, in 2007, names him Guerric II d'Avesnes and proposes an ancestry.
