[60731] Alvra's obitary: "AIvra D. Gray, 79, of Waldoboro died unexpectedly at his home here Tuesday. He was the husband of the late Mrs. Fannie (Maddocks) Gray, who died in 1959. He was born in Blue Hill, April 17, 1889; the son of John S. Gray and Ellen (Curtis) Gray. He attended, Morgan's ungraded school until the age of 15 and graduated from the George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill in 1908. He taught six years at Meddybemps, Blue Hill, Stonington and Deer Isle. After attending Bates College from 1914 to 1915, he taught at Bar Harbor, Hills Cove and Town Hill through 1915 to 1917. In World War 1 he was an ensign and commanded a submarine chaser. He later attended Columbia University where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was principal of Dennysville High School from 1922 and 1923 and superintendent of schools at Eustis from 1923 to 1926; and at Eastport from 1926 to 1931. He obtained his Master Degree in Education from Columbia in 1932. He was a member of the Chicago School of Survey Staff of Columbia University and during the depression was the principal of Brooksville High School until 1934. He was principal of Mexico from 1934 to 1937, and was superintendent of schools from 1937 until his retirement in 1945. At that time he established the Maine-Way Real Estate business here, and retired a second time in 1956. He was, a permanent member of the governor's advisory committee on education. He once said he became an educator because it was, in his opinion, 'the greatest force on earth for the creative progress of a free people.' He was a member of the Charles C. Lilly Post, American Legion, and was once secretary of the new International Trade Council for the promotion of the Quoddy Tidal Power Project, retiring in 1932. He was also on the Waldoboro School Board for six years."

[20013] Joseph was a soldier in the War for Independence. For his family, see "The History of Martha's Vineyard...," Charles E. Banks (Edgartown, MA: Dukes Co. Historical Society, 1966), Vol. 3, p. 258. They descend from Israel Luce who emigrated from Wales with his son Henry, b. 1645, who settled at Scituate, MA about 1666 and moving to Martha's Vineyard about 1670. Henry m. Remember Litchfield of Barnstable, MA (b. ca. 1644, living in Nov. 1808 when she signed legal documents). Henry's son Robert is the father of Joseph Luce (1726-1808). NSDAR 141575; NSDAC 14376. NEHGR 25:261 lists his as "Serj." in the 10th company of the 7th Massachusetts Regiment mobilized for the Battle of Louisbourg (1745). "The American Descendants of Henry Luce of Martha's Vineyard, 1640-1985," Mrs. James McCourt (9501 SE 13th St, Vancouver, WA 98664), 1985, p. 47, reports "res. Tisbury; served in Sea Coast Def. 1776 . . . m. 4 Apr 1748 Jedidah Claghorn . . . (Jedidah's "Mayflower" connection: 'NEHGR' 69 - 1915, pp. 242-243.)."

[58299] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 24 December 2024: "Milbridge - Donna Jordan Cirone, 91, died of a heart attack at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital December 11, 2024. She was born in Milbridge, September 18, 1933, to Herbert Alton and Lilo (Tracy) Stanwood. She attended Milbridge High School and was a founder of the Milbridge Alumni Association. She taught Sunday School at Wyman Methodist Church and was a lifetime member of the Alcyone Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. Donna loved music and dancing, cooking (especially bread) cake-decorating, quilting, and embroidery. She had beautiful penmanship and loved organizing benefit dinners. Donna picked crabs, packed fish, delivered mail, was a store clerk, a bank teller, key punch operator, waitress, CNA, and bookkeeper. She also served on the Milbridge Planning Board, was a town ballot clerk, Notary Public, and Justice of the Peace. She outlived three husbands, Alfred Jordan Sr., Morton Oliver, and Elliot (Eddie) Cirone. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Viki Smith; stepson, Stephen Oliver; sister, Catherine; and brothers, Robert and Les Stanwood. She is survived by her sister, Ramona West; son and his wife, Alfred Jr. and Pam Jordan and their family; daughter and her husband, Donita and Greg Whitehead and their family; son and his wife, Harry and Ann Jordan and their family; as well as the Olivers - Royce, Clayton, Patrick, Don Marie, and Cheri and Bub Cirone. Her special namesake, Donna Jean Sawyer, was chosen family."
