There were two Rice Edwards who came to New England in the 1600's. Researchers have confused the two over time. Hopefully this will help to determine which is which. We will show the dates and places which are factual.
The Rice Edwards, below was born in 1615 in either Wales or England. The Church of Latter Day Saints identify Rice Edwards, asbeing Christened on 30 November 1614 at Willoughby-With-Slothby, Lincolnshire, England. He was the son of John Edwards, had a brother named John and a sister named Susan. He also apparently had an uncle or older brother named Thomas. In a Wenham court record dated July 23, 1680, his age was given in a deposition about 65, his son Benjamin as 18 years.
His marriage was assumed to be about June 1634 when the Court in Salem, Ma had a presentment against him and his wife for incontinency (public display of affection) before marriage, but was married by the Court date of December 10, 1643. The History of Salem, Massachusetts, page 140 states "The name of his wife was probably Elinor, and born about 1620." In September 1680, Vol. 4 of the Quartlery Courts, Elinor at the house of Rice Edwards testified that she was about 60 years old.
The date Rice Edwards immigrated to the New World is not known, he received a grant of land on February 13, 1642/3 in what was to become Wenham, and was raising a family in Wenham and later in Beverly from 1644 to 1662.
Rice Edwards took Oath of Fidelity to King Charles on December 3, 1677, his occupation is noted as "Pavir" or paver, which is a person who lays or sets paving stones, similar to one who would lay stones for foundations or chimneys. His son John was a stone mason.
Wenham Congregational Church list of Cummunicants on January 13, 1674 lists Ellena Edwards as number 45 of 77 persons.
In Essex County, Massachusetts Probate Records, Book 307, Page 134, is found an agreement between Rice Edwards and his son Benjamin by which the son agreed to take care of his father, in consideration of which he was to receive the greater share of his father's estate, document dated April 18, 1681. No allusion to the wife of Rice Edwards and it can be assumed she died before April, 1681. Much more is written into the agreement. This agreement was signed by; Rice Edwards, John Edwards, Thomas Edwards, and "in right of Thy wife", John Knowlton, John Leach, John Coy, William Cleeves and Richard Lee, and dated June 15, 1683. Rice and his wife are probably buried in what is now called Dodge's Row Cementery, no marker.
The information above was obtained from Genealogy.Com, Family Tree Maker. Which has much more detail than presented here.
