Compton's Encyclopedia (via America Online, 1995): "CHARLES II (born 1630, ruled 1660-85) was the second son of Charles I. He was 19 years old and safe in France when his father was beheaded in 1649. England then became a commonwealth (that is, a republic), with Cromwell as lord protector. The Royalists of Scotland at once proclaimed young Charles their king; so he went to Scotland and in 1651 was crowned king of the Scots at Scone. In the same year he marched into England with 10,000 Scots to halt Cromwell's advance; but Cromwell defeated him at Worcester and put his army to rout. For six weeks Charles wandered about, a fugitive with a price of 1,000 pounds set on his head. More than 40 persons shared his secret, yet not one betrayed him. After an amazing series of adventures, including his concealment in a tree called the "royal oak," he escaped to France and spent ten years more in exile. He had a string of mistresses from Lady Castlemaine to Nell Gwynn. With no children by his wife, Catarine, his known children include James Scott, Duke of Monmouth (d. 1685), a pretender to the British throne, brought to England in 1662 where Charles acknowledged him as his son. James married and took the Scott surname of his wife. James captained the royal troops and defeated the Scottish Covenanters at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge, 1678. However, Charles banished him in favor of his brother James, a papist. In the ensuing wars James was defeated by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and executed for treason. Charles also had Charles, Earl of Plymouth (d. 1680); Charles, 1st Duke of Southampton (d. 1730); Henry, 1st Duke of Grafton (d. 1690); Charlotte (d. 1718, m. Edward Lee, Earl of Lincoln, who d. 1716); George, Duke of Northumberland (d. 1716); Charles Beauclerk, Duke of St. Albans (d. 1726); James Beauclerk (d. 1680); Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond (1672-1723; had Charles, Duke of Richmond [1701-1750]). [Charles II kept 'King Charles' spaniels in his bedchamber - 17th century diarist John Evelyn wrote that they 'rendred it very offensive, and indeede made the whole court nasty and stinking' - Charles II was so devoted to the dogs that he took them along to Council meetings.]
For his descendants, see chart at http://www.friesian.com/flanders.htm.

[59286] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 7 May 2025: "Jonesboro, Maine - Wellington "Billy" Noyes, born on April 2, 1936, passed away on April 25, 2025, at the age of 89. Billy was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Wanda Dodge Noyes; his children, Nancy Emery, Lisa Noyes, Nathan Noyes, and Leigh Noyes; along with his son-in-law, Douglas Emery, and daughter-in-law, Danielle Noyes. Billy was blessed with six grandchildren, Devon Emery, Seth Emery, Ashley Davis, Brianne Fitzsimmons, Benjamin, and Jacob Noyes; and thirteen great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Elliott Noyes and his wife, Julie, and their three children, Steven, Dan, and Elizabeth, along with their immediate families. Numerous cousins and nephews also mourn his loss. The son of Horace Norman Noyes and Evelyn Whitney Noyes, Billy spent 39 years working for the Maine State Department of Transportation, beginning as a humble highway worker and rising to the rank of foreman. His dedication and hard work earned him recognition as an accomplished member of the Maine State Employees Association (MSEA), where he served as president and received a Lifetime Achievement award. Billy was most proud of being part of the second oldest married couple in the town of Jonesboro, where he was born and raised. He loved working in the woods, raking blueberries, reading, doing daily exercises, traveling, and watching basketball and baseball. He cherished sharing stories of his own life and those of his family. Billy was a kind and gentle man who never complained unless it was about road conditions or politics. His family is deeply grateful to the staff at Northern Lights Eastern Maine Medical Center and Beacon Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care. A celebration of Billy's life will be held in early August at Jonesboro Union Church. His favorite saying was 'Stay Strong,' words he lived by even in his final days. Billy's legacy of strength, kindness, and devotion will continue to inspire all who knew him."
