[11587] Margaret of Navarre, also Marguerite d'Angouleme (1492-1549), queen of Navarre, and sister of King Francis I of France, born in Angouleme, France. In 1527, after the death of her husband, Charles IV, duc d'Alencan (1489-1525), Margaret married King Henry II (1503-55) of Navarre, to whom she bore Jeanne d'Albret (1528-72), the mother of King Henry IV of France. Margaret was a defender and a patron of such French humanists and men of letters as the biblical scholar Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples (circa 1461-1536), the satirist François Rabelais, and the poet Clement Marot, whom she welcomed to her court. The queen strongly reflected the spirit of the French Renaissance in her espousal of church reform and religious liberty and through her own writings; her major work was The Heptameron (1558; trans. 1905), a collection of about 70 stories that are similar in structure to The Decameron by the Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio. Born July 6, 1911 at Franklin, he was the son of Ernest Lyman and Marcia Beryl (Hardison) Bragdon. He was a member of the United Baptist Church of Ellsworth. In 1974 he retired from the Maine Forest Service. He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Bragdon, Feb. 18, 1993. Survivors include one son, Manley Bragdon, Jr. and his wife, Gerry of Blue Hill; three daughters, Mary Allen and her husband, Ronald of Blue Hill, Anne Black and her husband, Edward of Harborside, Jackie Scott and her husband, Don of La Fuente, Calif.; two brothers, Dana Bragdon of Portland and Charles Bragdon of South Carolina; two sisters, Jessie Clark of Franklin and Theresa Mitchell of California; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. . . Interment will be in the spring at Bayview Cemetery, Franklin."

"Freeport Journal-Standard [Freeport, Illinois], 7 Februay 1938," p. 14: "Oscar Young Ritzman, 67, a resident of Freeport for many years, passed away at his home, 817 South West avenue, at 8:10 o'clock Sunday night after an illness of eight months. Funeral services will be conducted at the Walker mortuary, West Main street, at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Aubrey White, pastor of First Baptist church, of which Mr. Ritzman was a member, will conduct the services. Friends may view the body at the mortuary. Mr. Ritzman was born at La Crosse, Wis., July 10, 1870, the son of Charles and Malvina Young Ritzman. He was united in marriage March 30, 1893, to Ella M. Ebersol. The family resided on South Hancock avenue for 37 years and recently moved to the South West avenue address. Mr. Ritzmau was a painter by trade having been employed by the W. T. Rawleigh company for the past ten years. He leaves his wife and the following children, Mrs. Ruth George, Mrs. Geraldine Weaver, Freeport: Harry Ritzman, Peoria. There are also five grandchildren. One brother, Edward Ritzman, resides at Rockford and a sister, Mrs. Emma Brown, resides in Freeport. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Frank Ritzman, and a sister. Mrs William Wade."
