[43791] See http://www.griffincunningham.net/benjaminsmith/bakeman.txt. In 2020 the unverified file at https://www.eeterms.com/tree/hinkley_hodsdon/family_blake_bakeman.html offers: "Andrew was born in Georgetown, Sagadahoc County on the coast of Maine, son of Timothy Blake and Prudence Webster. Susanna was born in Georgetown also, eldest child of John Bakeman from Holland and Christiana Smart from Biddeford, York County, Maine. Andrew and Susanna married in 1784 in Castine, Hancock County, Maine. Andrew was a mariner, captain, and shipwright. Caution: There was more than one Blake family in coastal Maine that named a child Andrew W. There was even more than one Andrew Blake from that area who married a Bakeman. Their children were all recorded born in Castine. However, the 1790 census listed them in Penobscot, Hancock County as a couple with four children. No explanation of that fourth child, but it could have been one who died young, or a servant. Their neighbors included two John Bakeman households, senior and junior - undoubtedly Susannas father and brother. The 1800 census put them in Castine. They had five children: two girls and a boy age 10-15, and a boy and girl under 10. That accounts for all the children of record. The 1810 census listed the family back in Penobscot: a woman age 45+, a man between 26 and 44 (Andrew was four years younger than Susanna), and a young man and woman between 16 and 25 who must have been Ruth and Richard. Andrews date of death is unknown. Susanna reportedly died in 1843 in Brooksville, Hancock County, Maine. Their places of burial are unknown."

John m. 10 April 1651 in Boston, MA to Mary _____. [Two Gardiner families appear in the Visitation of Surrey, 1623] John was servant to Kenelm Winslow early at Plymouth; John moved to Hingham ca. 1650, and r. 1656 in south part of town. Larry Gardner on Prodigy 12/91 reports that "Early Settlers of Maryland" demonstrates that Gardners also used the name Garnett. A Richard Gardner emigrated to Maryland in 1637 with wife Elizabeth and children - some of his sons took the name Garnett. Carolyn Hartman (suprmm234@aol.com) offered 1 Jan 2003: "According to our family history, John Gardner came to Duxbury, Mass when he was 16 years old. He came from London with Governor Winthrop's brother in 1627. When Mr. Winthrop went back to London, John did not wish to go with him and so was put out as an apprentice and had to serve seven years. He came to Boston when he married, 6/10/1651 to a woman whose name was Mary. They settled in Hingham and had 10 children. The children were: John;7/17/1652:Samuel 3/23/1655: Stephen 8/14/1662: Christian 6/3/1668: Frances 3/31/1653: Deborah 7/5/1657: Thomas 6/5/1664: Mary 11/19/1654: Jane 2/4/1659: Benjamin 4/7/1666. He died 11/24/1668. Mary then married a second time to Nathaniel Chubbuck. His son Stephen was born in Hingham 8/14/1662. He married Dec. 20, 1687 to Sarah Warren, daughter of John and Deborah (Wilson) Warren of Boston. They had 9 children. He died 11/2/1715. She lived to be 101 years old." [35518] This person is from the unverified Mason Herrington tree in Ancestry.com in 2013 and requires further documentation. She is said to be daughter of John George and Ann Goldston. Ancestry.com offers: "George Name Meaning - English, Welsh, French, South Indian, etc.: from the personal name George, Greek Georgios, from an adjectival form, georgios 'rustic', of georgos 'farmer'. This became established as a personal name in classical times through its association with the fashion for pastoral poetry. Its popularity in western Europe increased at the time of the Crusades, which brought greater contact with the Orthodox Church, in which several saints and martyrs of this name are venerated, in particular a saint believed to have been martyred at Nicomedia in ad 303, who, however, is at best a shadowy figure historically. Nevertheless, by the end of the Middle Ages St. George had become associated with an unhistorical legend of dragon-slaying exploits, which caught the popular imagination throughout Europe, and he came to be considered the patron saint of England among other places. As an American family name, this has absorbed cognates from other European languages, including German Georg and Greek patronymics such as Georgiou, Georgiadis, Georgopoulos, and the status name Papageorgiou 'priest George'. In English-speaking countries, this surname is also found as an Anglicized form of Greek surnames such as Hatzigeorgiou 'George the Pilgrim' and patronymics such as Giorgopoulos 'son of George'."

[10626] During the War for Independence Daniel (who refused to take the Oath of Allegiance) was imprisoned by the British, his cattle and crops confiscated and his house torn down. He escaped with his family back to York, enlisted, and served in the ill-fated Penobscot Expedition. He was held as a prisoner at Fort George in 1779. After the war he returned to Penobscot and rebuilt their home. Rilla Leach Moore writes in "Mill Creek, Penobscot, Maine" (1967), p. 5, "A fire destroyed an early Baptist Church of 1823 on the land of Daniel Perkins. It was thought to be of an incendiary origin." Cf. "Maine Families in 1790, Volume 2", Ruth Gray, ed.
