Frederick "Red-beard" reigned as Emperor Frederick I: Duke of Swabia in 1147, elected German king 03-05-1152 and crowned at Aix-la-Chapelle on 03-09-1152, he was crowned Holy Roman Emperor at Rome 06-18-1155. He quarrelled with the papacy and made six expeditions into Italy. Legend states that he sits in a cavern in the Kyffhauser mountain in Thuringia awaiting the call of his country. He drowned bathing in or crossing the River Calycadnus near Seleucia in Cilicia. He was strong and successful, built up the towns and exercised power through "his earnest and commanding personality". He "was a man of well-proportioned, medium stature, with flowing yellow hair and a reddish beard. He delighted in hunting and the reading of history, and was zealous in his attention to public business, and his private life was unimpeachable. Carlyle called him `a terror to evil-doers and a praise to well-doers in this world, probably beyond what was ever seen since.'" - Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956 Edition, 9:711.

FREDERICK I (1123?-90). For his efforts to unify the German states and for his opposition to the Roman popes, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I became a legendary German hero and a symbol of national unity. (See also Holy Roman Empire.) Frederick was born in about 1123 at Waiblingen in Swabia (now in Germany), the son of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, duke of Swabia, and Judith, daughter of Henry IX, duke of Bavaria. When his father died in 1147, Frederick became duke of Swabia. Five years later, on March 4, 1152, he was elected emperor to succeed his uncle, Conrad III, who had died the previous month. Frederick's reign, as was true for most medieval rulers, was one of perpetual conflict on several fronts. Among his goals were: reestablishing imperial authority in Italy, fending off the growth of Byzantine power in the Mediterranean and southern Italy, maintaining the supremacy of the empire over the pope, and consolidating his rule in Germany. Only in the last of these endeavors was he to be successful to any great extent. Frederick invaded Italy in 1154 and was crowned emperor at Rome in 1155. His beard led the Italians to give him the nickname Barbarossa (Red Beard). The efforts in Italy were, in the long run, unsuccessful. Times had changed since Charlemagne had founded the empire in 800. The pope was playing a much stronger role in European affairs, and a number of powerful city-states had grown up in northern Italy. Several of the city-states formed a group called the Lombard League to oppose Frederick. The League's army defeated him at the battle of Legnano in 1176. The cities then became almost completely independent. His contest with the papacy failed as miserably: in 1177 he was forced to humble himself before Pope Alexander III. In Germany the emperor was more successful. He consolidated his power over the nobles and princes by building up a stable administration of imperial territory between the areas controlled by them. These lands were ruled by imperial ministerials who were personally responsible to Frederick. In 1189 he called for a Third Crusade to free Jerusalem from the Muslims (see Crusades). On the trek through Asia Minor with his army, he drowned in the Saleph River in 1190. - Compton's Encyclopedia via America On Line (1995)

[53288] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 17 December 1958, p. 8: "The death of Harold Hatch, 99, retired Bangor and Aroostook Railroad trainmaster, occurred at a local hospital Tuesday following a period of ill health. A native of Brewer, he had resided in the community throughout most of his lifetime. He was the son of John and Edna Tozier Hatch. Mr. Hatch had been in retirement in recent years, having completed 44 years of service with the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. He was a well-known sportsman, having traveled widely in Matne and Canada for fishing and hunting. He was the secretary and treasurer of the Penobscot Salmon Club and a member of the board of directors for many years. Mr. Hatch held the honor of landing the first salmon at the Bangor Pool, a trophy sent to former President Herbert Hoover. On another occasion, he was in a boat that landed the first salmon at the pool. He was a long-time member of the Penobscot County Conservation Association, Inc., and of several fish and game clubs throughout northeastern Maine."
