Edward II is surviving eldest son of Edward I and his first wife, Eleanor of Castile; born in Caernarvon Castle. According to the official account at the beginning of the 14th cenury his abysmal lack of seriousness and purpose for affairs of state caused the barons to assume control of the kingdom, and ultimately murder him. [This allowd his son, Edward III, to become king (with more strength and focus).] Especially serious was Edward II's granting of lands and lordships in Wales to the younger Despencer, alienating Roger Mortimer, Lord of Chirk, and others. Mortimer fought Edward, was captured, escaped the Tower of London, went to Paris, became paramour of Queen Isabella, returned with her to England with the support of the Count of Hainault, defeated Edward and supposidly ordered his murder.
Current scholarship believes that Edward II may have been taken to the continent from England and held there in secret until he died, his body then being returned to replace the unknown body in his tomb in Gloucester - "The Perfect King: The Life of Edward III, Father of the English Nation Appendix 2" Ian Mortimer (RosettaBooks, published as an eboook, 2007 - https://www.rosettabooks.com/ebook/edward-iii).
Edward II is buried in Gloucester Cathedral, where Edward III erected for him a grand tomb within the chancel. His basic biography is "Vita Edwardi Secundi," edited by N. Denholm-Young (London, 1957), but see the reference cited under his son, Edward III. Edward II was the first Prince of Wales. His favorite animals were his horses and hounds. He was a fine horseman and athlete. He always took a lion with him on his travels. To see Caernarvon Castle on the World Wide Web, try: http://www.castlewales.com/caernarf.html
