[1582] A great leader in Spanish history, Alphonso led a coalition of Christian princes and foreign crusaders which broke the power of the Almohades at the battle of the Navas de Tolosa in 1212. He founded the first Spanish university, Palencia, but it did not survive him. - Frederick L. Weis {"Ancestral Roots of Sixty New England Colonists", Lancaster, MA, 1950"} suggests that Alphonso VIII is son of Fernando II, King of Leon (d.1188) and his wife Urraca of Portugal (m.1160). Alphonso VIII reigned 1158-1214. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cousin/html/p74.htm offers: "He and reina de Castilla Eleanor d' Anjou were founded the Monasterio de las Huelgas, a Cistercian monastery, in 1187 in Burgos, Castile - León, Spain. He abandoned at the last minute by the fellow Christian Kingdoms of Navarre and Leon (ruled by a cousin) which led to a great Muslim victory in 1195 in the Battle of Alarcos.10 He was defeated by Abû Yûsuf Ya'qûb of the Almohads, a new Berber dynasty which invaded the muslim power vacuum in al-Andalus, in Alarcos, on the Córdoba-Toledo road in July 1195 in the Battle of Alarcos.11 He was able, with the assistance of fellow Christian Kingdoms, to finally defeat the Almohads decisively at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, near Bailén in northern Andalusia, the same spot where Scipio had defeated the Carthaginians more than a millennium before, on 16 July 1212." [44382] James attended the New Bloomfield Academy where he managed the football team and in 1912 was President of the Academy's Philomethean Literary Society. He taught school and after marrying became the first rural mail carrier for his town. He died as a result of being thrown from a truck bed in which he and other members of the Ickesburg baseball team were riding - the truck hit a major bump in the road west of Blain.

He was born in Ellsworth, Feb. 22, 1930, the son of Ralph and Margaret (Linscott) Hamilton. Milton attended Ellsworth High School and enlisted in the Navy in 1947. He married Ida Watts, the love of his life, on Oct. 27, 1949, and was happily married for 73 years. He was a volunteer at Ellsworth Fire Department for many years. He loved to fish, hunt, garden, and snowmobile. He loved and cherished his family most of all. Milton is survived by his sons, Ted and wife Helen and Philip and wife Karen, all of Ellsworth; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Ida; sons, Milton Hamilton Jr. and Calvin Hamilton; brothers, Hollis Hamilton and Robert Hamilton; and sister, Helen Carter."

On her mother's side she was descended from the Quincys, a family of great prestige in the Massachusetts colony; her father and other forebearers were Congregational ministers, leaders in a society that held its clergy in high esteem. Abigail Smith married John Adams in 1764. The young couple lived on John's small farm at Braintree (later renamed Quincy) or in Boston as his practice expanded. In ten years she bore three sons and two daughters, including another President, John Quincy Adams.
