Find A Grave memorial 12274978 offers: "Evermott Pogue Bain (aka E. P. Bain) was born in Knox County, Kentucky on Nov 14, 1853. He married Mary Ellen Pope in Knox County, Kentucky on Dec 28, 1874. He was 20 years old and Mary Ellen was 18 when they married. They had their first child,Mattie, just one year later. They lived in Kentucky until 1885. Then, Evermott and Mary Ellen and their first four children (five): Mattie, Dessie Lee, John Jessie, Lloyd (and maybe Crissie) went by covered wagon from Knox Co. Kentucky first to Mankato, Jewell, Kansas (1885 census), and then in 1887 to Selden, Kansas where they homesteaded on land about 1 mi. North and 1/2 mi. West of Selden. They lived in the covered wagon until a dugout covered with willows and sod plastered with native lime was constructed. Evermott died in Selden, Kansas, on Mar 18, 1894. He was 40 years old; leaving a pregnant Mary Ellen and seven children. Evermott is buried in the Selden Cemetery with Mary Ellen who died in 1902 and with the child that she was pregnant with when he died: Edith Parker Bain. Edith died the same year that she was born, 1894." He is son of

The unverified One World Tree at Ancestry.com in 2007 states she was b. in Ilbesheim, Pfalz. Christina Straub states "Abigail" immigrated on the ship "Royal Union" from Rotterdam to Philadelphia, PA and offers somewhat different information for her parents.

He helped build the Yellow Springs Hospital near his home in Chester County, which would soon be used as a field hospital for the casualties of the war. His wife, Abigail, became a recurrent visitor to the hospital, spending much of her time ministering to the sick and wounded soldiers. As a result of her devotion to help the suffering, she contracted typhus, which would later cause her untimely death. [Cf. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pacheste/chester_military_rw_hosp.htm and http://www.yellowsprings.org/exhibits/women/Pages/RevWarHospital.htm] On September 11, 1777, Washington encountered General William Howe's army at the Battle of Brandywine. He wisely decided to withdraw, saving his men to 'fight another day'. During his retreat, Washington and his staff officers stopped at the Rice farm and asked Abigail if they could have some water. She sent one of her daughters to retrieve a pitcher of water from their well, to which she added some sugar, spices, and rum, making a drink that was popularly known as 'flip'. Abigail handed the drink to him and said, 'Here, my Lord.' Washington quickly replied, 'We have no titles here, we are all brothers.' As General Washington drank this beverage, Abigail's five-year-old daughter, Susannah, approached him. Washington smiled, picked her up, and sat her on his knee while he finished his drink. For Abigail's contributions during the war, there is a chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in her name in Washington, DC. [Abigail Hartman Rice Chapter {DAR} merged with Emily Nelson Chapter in September 2003] There is also a plaque in her honor in the Bell Tower at Valley Forge. After the war, the Rices continued to farm their land and raise their family. Then, in 1789, Zachariah was struck with two overwhelming blows. The first was the death of his beloved wife, Abigail. She had succumbed to the typhus that she contracted during the war. She was buried at St. Peter's Church in Chester County. Shortly thereafter, Zachariah lost his land, along with 114 other families in Pikeland Township." Her original grave marker had this inscribed on it: "Some have children - Some have none. Here lies the mother of twenty-one." It continued "An account states that seventeen of her twenty-one children followed her body in procession to the grave; such a sight was never before seen in Pikeland and may never be again." Another account:
Abigail Hartman immigrated from Germany in 1750 and married Zachariah Rice in 1757. As their family expanded, colonial unrest also grew. Some Hartmans were on the Committee of Safety and, along with Rice, joined the local militia. By 1778 rampant disease was a bigger enemy to the struggling Continental Army than the British. General Washington established the military hospital at Yellow Springs about one mile from the Rice farm.
It wasn't long before Abigail worked as a nurse at the Yellow Springs hospital. She was among the nurses who lobbied for and got higher wages. They also attempted to free Chester County soldiers from prison in New York City. Abigail's service wasn't without consequence--she contracted typhoid fever at the hospital and never fully recovered. She died from the effects of her illness in 1789.
About Abigail Hartman Rice's contributions, historian Blake McGready has noted that "...not all sacrifices in the American Revolution were on the battlefield. 'Ordinary women' helped influence the course the war took in many ways. Abigail Hartman Rice helps us understand how that was possible in the Revolutionary Era."
