[41147] http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~shopefamily/Tree states Richard's wife was Margaret _____. and reports: "Margaret was a widow when she married Richard. They settled as early as 1672 on what was known as New Damariscove Island, now Haskell Island. They also owned 500 acres at Potts Neck, now Potts Harbor, at the extremity of Harpswell Neck. Richard also owned 200 acres at Maquoit which he sold in Apr 1675. The following year, Margaret was killed by Indians. Due to numerous Indian attacks during August of 1676, a 'number of refugees had sought shelter on the island (Jewel Island) and their leader, Richard Potts of Haskell Island, set a watch upon the shore. The wily Indian warriors hid themselves in the wooded heights of neighboring Cliff Island, and the white men thinking themselves safe went fishing. Thereupon the savages sped across in canoes and attacked the women and children. Their cries and shots alarmed the men who hastened back but Mrs. Potts, who was washing clothes on the beach, and her two children were killed in sight of her husband.' Another version: 'Upon Jewel's Island, others fortified a house and made preparations for defending themselves. But the Indians, flushed with their successes, rushed upon this Island, Sept. 2, when the men were fishing, the women engaged in washing by the water side, and the children scattered about the shore. At first, a brave lad firing from the house, killed two Indians, and thus gave the alarm. Mrs. Potts and several of her children were quickly seized, when one of them seeing his father coming in a boat, ran towards him, crying for help,-till caught by a savage, upon whom the father durst not fire, through fear of killing his child. One of the men rowed off his canoe towards Richmond Island for assistance, and the others with great intrepidity rushed into the midst of the Indians, and with the loss of two killed and five made captive, drove them to their canoes.' Apparently their nine-year old son Thomas was the one whose gunshot alerted the men. Son Thomas sold Robert's land in 1702."
