William came to Plymouth in 1621 on the Ship Fortune; resided at Duxbury and Bridgewater, MA; was a blacksmith, gunsmith and metal worker. The Bassett family in Sandwich, England is Huguenot per Barber's "British Family Names" {-"The Trail of the Huguenots...," G. Elmore Reaman (Toronto: Thomas Allen Ltd., 1963, p.263)} William is of the Sandwich, England and Bethnal Green, Middlesex line. {-"Saints and Strangers", George F. Williston (New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1945), and "The Pilgrim Reader".} The surname appears in 1066--Thurstine de Bassett was Grand Falconer to the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings. The name is thereafter notable in England - in the Domesday Book as well as the Battle Abbey Roll. Thurstine built Beaupre Castle near Cambridge in Glamorgan, Wales, soon after the Conquest, and his son Ralph was Lord Chief Justice of England under King Henry I. Another Bassett castle is at Tehidy Park in Camborne, Cornwall; this line had large incomes from mining. Two Bassetts were among the King's counsellors at the signing of the Magna Charta. The Leyden, Holland record indicates that "Pioneer" William Bassett came from Sandwich, England, a master mason, widower of Cecelia Light. William was Representative, 1640-44; with Gov. Bradford and others he joined in the purchase of Dartmouth and moved to Bridgewater, Mass. in 1652. Arriving in 1621, he was one of the "purchasers", first in Plymouth with his wife, Elizabeth, and son, William, and daughter, Elizabeth, and took part in the division of cattle in 1627; then resided at Duxbury; then was among the first settlers and a proprietor of Bridgewater. "Pioneer" William Bassett was baptised at Stepney, 24 Oct 1600, per Charles Edward Banks, "The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers" (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1971), p.106, who also states that he arrived in America never married and married there before the land division of 1623! "The Mayflower Planters" (Balt.: Gen. Pub. Co.) lists William who arrived on the Fortune in 1621 as married to Margaret Oldham and settled in Duxbury, an "iron monger from Bethnal, Co. Middlesex," whose father is John Bassett. Also see the "Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families." (Note: Mary and Elizabeth are often the same name - Mary Oldham may be Elizabeth Bassett.) Cf. "Plymouth Colony," Eugene Stratton, pp. 242-3; "One Bassett Family in America," Buell Burdett Bassette (New Britain, Conn.: 1926), pp. 1-10.
The LDS Church's unverified Ancestral File (8FNH-SF) provides an ancestry for William. See "The History of Martha's Vineyard...," Charles E. Banks (Edgartown, MA: Dukes Co. Historical Society, 1966), Vol. 3, p. 30ff. and "Pioneers of Massachusetts - 1620-1650," Charles Henry Pope (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2013), p. 37. Cf. "The Bassetts of New England" A Comparison of Five Early Immigrants," Jeffrey N. Bassett ("New England Ancestors" Vol. 5, No. 2, spring 2004, pp. 44-45, 53), Family Tree Maker's CD 194, "Cape Cod Library," I:1260 and http://www.bassett.net.
Ancestry.com offers about this surname: "English: from Old French basset, a diminutive of basse 'low', 'short', either a nickname for a short person or a status name for someone of humble origins."

[2232] Berenger overthrew Hugh of Provence and seized the crown of Italy. Forced to do homage to German King Otto I in 952, Berenger died in captivity. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cousin/html/p78.htm offers: "Berengar II, Markgraf von Ivrea, König von Italien was third cousin, once removed, of Lothar II, the former king of Italy. Also called re d' Italia Berenger II d' Ivrea. He was born in 900. He was the son of Adalbert I, Markgraf von Ivrea and Markgräfin von Ivrea Gisela von Friaul. He married Willa, Markgräfin von Ivrea, Königin von Italien, daughter of Markgraf von Tuszien Boso III von Arles and Willa von Hoch-Burgund, in 931. He was crowned, with his son Adalbert II as co-ruler (a move Emperor Otto regarded as usurpation and forcing to him journey there), King of Italy on 15 December 950 in San Michele, Pavia, Italy. King of Italy in German Empire, between 15 December 950 and 963. He was installed on the throne of Italy, by Otto I of Germany, to whom he would be a vassal, in 951. He made moves to take Rome, upon which the Pope called on Otto I of Germany to assist in 961. He removed by Otto, with his wife Willia, to Bamberg before Otto's own return to Germany before 964.8 He died on 4 August 966 in Bamberg, Germany, at age 66 years."
