He was the 2nd of 3 children born to Phineas and Sara. His mother Sara died when Sylvanus was 7 years old. Phineas then married Frances Ella Beal and together they had 4 children, step sibiligs of Sylvanus. Sylvanus married Emeline French in 1843. Miss French was from Cutler, Maine and the daughter of Freeman French and Mary Ann Davis Norton. Sylvanus and Emeline had 11 children, Phineas Manwarren II, Hiram Alexander, Harriet, Anna M, Sylvanus Rodney, Jr, Leonard B, Edwin Forrest, Delplina, Neriah, Iran, and Sarah W Norton.
