[15957] Edward ran the ferry for 25 years after his father died, and was succeeded as ferryman by William Pearce, his brother-in-law. He had three sisters and was apparently the only son of Arthur to reach adulthood. He fished on the Isle of Shoals before taking over the ferry.

"People's Advocate and Press, New Bloomfield, PA, October 14, 1904" offers:
William Rice, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of this place, was so seriously injured by a fall in Philadelphia early Wednesday morning of last week that he died in the Hahnemann Hospital Sunday at 11:45 a.m.
The particulars, as nearly as we can learn them, are as follows: Mr. Rice, who had been in falling health for some years from a complication of diseases incident to old age, Monday morning of last week went to Philadelphia to consult a specialist. He called at the latter's office Monday, but he being away from the city, Mr. Rice was unable to see him until the next day, when he held a long consultation with the physician. He was stopping at the "Hanover," corner of Arch and 12th streets, and apparently retired about 7 o'clock Tuesday evening, but called later for blankets. This was the last seen of him, until some time after 12 o'clock when his body was discovered by the night watchman lying on the hotel pavement on 12th street, at the end of the hotel leading into Applegate street. The unfortunate man was unconscious and bleeding profusely from the mouth. A hurried call was made for an ambulance and he was taken to Hahnemann Hospital where the surgeons discovered that in the fall he had sustained a fracture of the skull above the left temple, his left cheek bone was broken and left shoulder dislocated. Wednesday trephining was resorted to relieve the pressure on the brain. He remained in an unconscious condition until his death which occurred as above stated, although at intervals he seemed to recognize the voices of his children about him, all of whom Rev. H. G. Rice, of Monticello, Indiana; Mrs. Minnie Rhinesmith, of Charles City, Iowa, Mrs. Carrie Flickinger, of Lock Haven, and Mrs. Lillian Peale of this place, were immediately summoned after the accident and were with him to the last until death claimed him.
Wm. Rice was the son of the late Judge John Rice and wife Margaret (Ickes) Rice, and was born in this place, Sept. 18, 1826, and at the time of his death was consequently aged 78 years and 28 days. His ancestors were of German descent and came to this country about the middle of the eighteenth century, and his parental ancestors were called Rays or Reiss. He was the first child born in New Bloomfield after its selection as the county-seat. His father, John Rice, had lived in what is now Ickesburg, and had moved to this place in 1824 to erect the county jail. The subject of this sketch spent his earlier years in this place and later went back to Saville township, near Ickesburg, where he tilled a farm--one of the finest in that section--until 1867, when he moved to this place, where he has since resided, educating his children here and saw them go out from the parental roof.
He was married Dec. 22, 1852, to Caroline Milligan, daughter of the late Thos. Milligan, of Sandy Hill Dist. From this union there resulted the following children: Rev. Harris G. Rice, of Monticello, Ind.; Thomas Ward Rice, of Los Angeles, Cal.; Minnie (Mrs. C. W. Rhinesmith) of Charles City, Iowa; Annie, who died May 31, 1865; Carrie Mc. (Mrs. J. R. Flickinger) of Lock Haven; Lillian O., (Mrs. S. Edwin Peale) of this place. Mrs. Rice died May 24, 1892. Twelve grandchildren also survive, as well as the following brothers and sister; David I. Rice, of Conewago, Pa.; John Rice of Denton, Md.; Oliver Rice, of this place, and Mrs. Catherine E. Aldrich of Duncannon.
Since his residence in this place he had lived a retired life, and after the death of his wife his daughter, Mrs. S. E. Peale, had resided with him and tenderly cared for him in his declining years.
Mr. Rice was an ardent stalwart Republican and was unswerving his his loyalty to his party's principles. He served in a number of local offices and Nov. 5, 1878, he was elected county treasurer over J. B. Clark, by a vote of 2744 to 2652. He served in every public capacity with fidelity and honor. He was a sociable gentleman, well read and conversant and alive to the questions of the day. He was kind to the poor and a friend to the needy. He was a devoted father and husband and his death is a stroke to his children, especially to the one who had since been his almost constant companion since his wife died.
His death under the circumstances is especially sad, and his demise will be lamented by a large circle of relatives and friends.
Upon the death of Mr. Rice the coroner of the city took charge of the remains and will make a thorough investigation as to its cause. No one at the hotel, it is alleged, saw him leave it, and his absence was only noted when his body was discovered. A theory of the Physicians at the hospital is that he had been suddenly stricken with delirium, resulting and was overcome as he came to the pavement and fell prone upon it. His money and other valuables were found on his person, so that it is believed his injuries were not the result of an assault.
His remains will be brought here Wednesday morning and interred in the family plot in the cemetery in the afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. I. Potter Hayes of the Presbyterian church officiating.
