"The Blair Family of New England," compiled by Emily Wilder Leavett (Boston: David Clapp and Son, 1900) provides his ancestry and on p. 176 states Richard was a freeman of Farmington, CT in 1669 and a townsman there in 1682, then moved in 1686 to Kensington, CT; was one of the leaders in the Great Swamp Settlement of Kensington, and captain of the Seymour Fort which offered protection to the first settlers there; he died by the fall of a tree. Find A Grave Memorial 63031451 offers: "The son of Richard & Mercy (Ruscoe) Seymour, he moved to Norwalk with his parents. After the death of his father & his mother's remarriage to John Steele, he and his brother returned to Hartford and eventually to Farmington. He was a freeman in the Kensington section of Farmington (later Berlin) in 1669 and in 1672, he was one of the 84 proprietors of the town of Kensington. He joined the Farmington church on May 31, 1685 and his wife joined on March 1, 1679/80. He was appointed Capt. at the garrison of the fort in Kensington. His wife was Hannah (Woodruff), daughter of Matthew & Hannah Woodruff. The children fathered by Richard were as follows:
Samuel Seymour who married Hannah North. Hannah Seymour who married Mr. Pomeroy. Mercy Seymour born January 14, 1683. Ebenezer Seymour who married Abigail Hollister. Jonathan Seymour who was born April 17, 1687 and died in 1725. He married Eunince Hollister. She was born about 1696 and after the death of Jonathan, she married on January 13, 1726 to one William Chittister. However, he apparently was a neglectful father to her children and certain Seymour relatives petitioned the authorities to insure better guardians for the children's welfare. Capt. Richard Seymour died Nov., 1710 at Berlin by the fall of a tree. He was buried on a portion of his own land which was afterwards used as a family burial place. The inventory of his estate was taken Nov. 29, 1710 and his property was valued at 416 pounds, 12 shillings, and 2 pence. Richard planned on giving the burial plot to the town to be used as a cemetery but before he had a chance to do so, he died. His son, Samuel on inheriting half of his father's land, sold the land to the neighboring minister of the town church, the Rev. William Burnham where it became known as the Christian Lane Cemetery. Most of the old stones, such as those of the Seymour family, had disintegrated or been removed by 1930."
