"Gardner's" emigrant ancestor arrived in the Amberson Valley of Pennsylvania by 1800. He graduated in 1921 from high school in Jacksonville, FL and he graduated in 1927 from The University of Florida, with a major in English. He also studied at Duke University (summer term, 1932) and the University of Mississippi.
He wrote "For more than 2 years after being graduated from the University of Florida, I worked for a chain store organization at towns from Ottumwa, Iowa to Houston, Texas. From 1930 to 1933 I taught, one year at a consolidated high school at Greenville, Florida, two years at a high school at Tampa, Florida. Taught part time simultaneously for two years at University of Tampa, Florida. From May 1, 1933 to September 30, 1939, was on active duty with the C.C.C. Was ordered to extended duty with the Regular Army July 1, 1940."
His initial military appointment was 8 June 1926. For several weeks in the summer he was at Ft. McPherson and Ft. Bragg in 1926, then in 1930 at Ft. Screven, and in 1931 at Ft. McPherson (where he advanced to 1st Lt.), again at Ft. McPherson in 1932, then at Ft. Screven in 1934. During the 1930s he served with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)(Co. 2418), and he was CCC Camp Commander in the 4th Corp area commanding a camp of around 200 men - responsible for feeding, house, clothing, discipline, education and their welfare. He entered active service with the U. S. Army 1 July 1940 and served until 10 June 1946; his final active rank was Lt. Col., and for the first 48 months he was Classification and Assignment Officer at Camp Cook, CA, then at Oahu, New Caledonia and Luzon (in the Philippines). His next 8 months were as personnel staff officer with the War Department in Washington, D.C. He attended the Adjutant General School in Arlington, VA for 5 weeks in 1941 and advanced to Captain, taking the officer classification course. He received a bronze service star for the Luzon campaign, and the American Defense, American Theatre Asiatic-Pacific Philippine Liberation ribbons, and the World War II victory medal. After "Gardner" received the Bachelor of Laws degree 7 June 1948 at the University of Florida (and became a member 30 June 1947 of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity), he re-entered active Army service from Reserve status on 11 June 1948 and on 9 June 1949 in General Orders 27 (U. S. Army) was in the list of those certified to practice as law members of general courts martial. He served at the Nuremberg war crimes trials, and received the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), the Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was posted to Miami to work with reserve officers at the University of Miami, and purchased the family home at 13901 Old Cutler Road. His final assignment was in Sept 1956 at Fort Benning as president of the Third Army Physical Evaluation Board. He retired from the U. S. Army 30 Nov 1957 as a Colonel, returned to Miami and pursued a career in secondary public education (he taught honors English for many years at Palmetto High School in suburban Miami)..
