Charles Hinckley, reports that the family name likely originated from the town Hinckley in Leicestershire, ca. 90 miles NW of London near the geographical center of England. The first of the name appears to be Roger de Hynkeley who possessed Westgate manor in Co. Kent and d. ca. 1363-5. He was a volunteer on the ship Oliver Cromwell, built in Saybrook, Conn. and commanded by Timothy Parker, Esq. Time of entry, Mar 22, 1777; he was discharged on Sept 10, 1777 (Connecticut Historical Society Vol 8 p 256). He married Martha Baldwin and they had one child Ruth born 1792 died in 1890. She married Lebbus Auger in 1812."
