[3128] Hubert was Regent and obtained the honour of Kent in 1227. See The Peerage, Vol. VII, pp. 133-142 - see note a on p. 133 regarding parentage. Cf. http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands which offers: "Hubert de Burgh (-Banstead, Surrey 12 May 1243, bur London, Church of the Black Friars). He was appointed Chamberlain to John Comte de Mortain (the future John King of England) in or before 1198, holding the office until 1205 except for a brief interlude after the return of King Richard I and before the latter's death. He was seriously wounded at the siege of castle of Chinon in Normandy in 1205, which may account for the loss of his public offices and his temporary disappearance from the records. He remained a powerful supporter of King John, siding with the king against the barons at the signing of Magna Carta in 1215. He successfully defended Dover Castle against Louis de France who had invaded England in 1216, and was a party to the treaty of peace made with Louis 11 Sep 1217 before he left England. Hubert became the most powerful official in England during the minority of King Henry III and was created Earl of Kent 19 Feb 1227 immediately after the king came of age. His downfall came in 1232, when he was deprived of his Earldom and imprisoned in the Tower. He was pardoned and restored in 1234, but thereafter took little part in public life. Betrothed (agreement confirmed 28 Apr 1200) to Joan de Vernon, daughter of William de Vernon Earl of Devon & his wife Mabile de Meulan (-after 1233). - m firstly (after 1205) as her second husband, Beatrice de Warenne, widow of Doun [Dodo] Bardolph Lord of Shelford, daughter of William de Warenne of Wormegay, Norfolk & his first wife Beatrix de Pierrepont (-before 12 Dec 1214). - m secondly as her third husband, Isabel [Avise] Countess of Gloucester, divorced wife (firstly) of John King of England and widow (secondly) of Geoffrey de Mandeville Earl of Essex, daughter of William FitzRobert 2nd Earl of Gloucester & his wife Avise de Beaumont ([before 1176]-14 Oct or [18 Nov] 1217, bur Canterbury Cathedral Church). Her lands and title were confiscated on the death of her second husband, who died a rebel. - m thirdly (York Jun 1221) Margaret of Scotland, daughter of William "the Lion" King of Scotland & his wife Ermengarde de Beaumont (1193-1259, bur London, Church of the Black Friars)." An unverified file in Ancestry.com offers: "Genealogical and Family History of the State of Maine By George Thomas Little, Henry, p. 823: (III) George (3), son of George (2) Jacobs, was born in Salem Village, now Danvers Port, September 29, 1677. In 1718 he sold a part of his father's estate to his brother John. At that time he was living in Wells, Maine, where he had removed about 1700. He married there first, December 16, 1701, Hannah Cussins; he married second, October 21, 1742, Elizabeth Burnham. Children: 1. Lydia, born December, 1702; married, November, 1726, Joseph Stevens. 2. Hannah, born June 20, 1705; married, June 10, 1727, John Stevens. 3. George, mentioned below. 4. John, married, October 30, 1745, Deborah Ware. 5. Priscilla, married, September 16, 1736, Joshua Bartlett. 6. Elizabeth, married, September, 1734, Joseph Taylor. 7. Benjamin, married, June, 1750, Hannah Bank, of York, Maine."

Another unverified file in Ancestry.com in 2010 offers: "George Jacobs was born about 1617, probably in England, and was farming near Salem, MA, by the 1640s. He and his wife attended church infrequently, and he was known for his 'salty tongue' and quick temper. He was in court in 1677 for striking a man while in a rage. George was accused by his own granddaughter of practicing witchcraft, and arrested on May 10, 1692. He went on trial August 5, and after failing to properly recite the Lord's Prayer (George was illiterate), he was found guilty. On conviction he stated, 'Well burn me or hang me. I'll stand in the truth of Christ.' George and four others met their ends on Gallows Hill two weeks later. His last words were, 'I am falsely accused. I never did it.' In 1693 George's widow Mary married a man who had been widowed by the witch trials, and in 1711 the General Court of MA made reparations of 79 pounds to the heirs of George Jacobs. George's family buried his body on his farm, and some of his descendants, still living on the site, unearthed his remains in 1864, and found a tall arthritic toothless skeleton. His remains were taken to Salem in 1992, and reburied as part of the ceremony marking the 300th anniversary of the trials."
