[55773] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]," 13 February 2024: "Yarmouth - Ernest E. Beal, 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday afternoon, Feb. 5, 2024, at the Coastal Manor Nursing Home in Yarmouth, with family at his side. He was born in Jonesport on July 14, 1932, a son of Ernest Wellington and Ava (Reed) Beal. After graduating from Jonesport High School, he met and married the love of his life, Leah A. Urquhart on June 27, 1952, and together they settled in Jonesport to raise their five children: Alton, Robert, Wayne, Larry and Charlotte, before moving to Ellsworth about eight years later. Ernie had lived in Ellsworth for 62 years before his move to Yarmouth. He worked many jobs over the years, but his favorite was his many years with the Gilltex Company for whom he sold clothing to retail stores throughout Maine. Ernie attended the Bible Baptist Church in Hancock for many years before relocating to Yarmouth. Ernie served the Lord for many years singing, not only in his home church, but in other churches and nursing homes in the Downeast as well. He loved to talk with people, tell jokes to make them laugh, and to put smiles on everyone's faces every day, anytime he could. Everyone loved Ernie as he made so many friends over the years in the greater Downeast area and beyond. He was an avid sports fan, especially of baseball, and was an absolute fan of the New York Yankees and their storied franchise history. He was a loving, devoted, and hardworking husband, father, grandfather, and brother, who will be dearly missed. He leaves behind three sons; Robert Beal and wife Sheila, Wayne Beal, and Larry Beal, all of Ellsworth; his daughter Charlotte Morse and husband Steve of Franklin; his daughter-in-law Charleen Beal of Auburn; his grandchildren Ernie, who was named after him, Ashley, Tanya, Bridgette, Robbie, Nicki, Starr, Marsha, Jason, Jared and Caden; 18 great-grandchildren; his distant cousin, Hubene Brodie, of Ellsworth, who was like a sister to him; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 67 years, Leah Beal, his son Alton E. Beal who passed away on January 23 of this year, and a brother Harlan Beal."

[3131] Gilbert, the Red Earl, was a Knight and Crusader; 9th Earl of Clare, Earl of Hertford and Gloucester. At his death he was "the most powerful subject in the kingdom" (Encyclopaedia Britannica, '56, 5:755). He was knighted 14 May 1264. "Ancestral Roots..." (Balt., 1992) states he d. at Monmouth Castle on 7 Dec 1299. http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/history/kells.htm reports "Young Gilbert de Clare's premature death at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 meant the end of the main male line of the de Clare family. The vast fortune of the de Clare's including in Kilkenny were divided among Gilbert's three sisters; Margaret, Elanor and Elizabeth. Margaret was married to Piers Gaveston, close attendant of Edward II; upon Gaveston's untimely death, Margaret was married to Hugh Audley. Eleanor, was married to Hugh le Despenser - who replaced Gaveston as Edward's favourite. Le Despenser was later beheaded with his father in 1326. Eleanor went on to marry William la Zouche. Elizabeth married no less than three times - John de Burgh first, then Theobald Lord Vernon, and finally Roger Damory." Find A Grave memorial 84189824 offers: "Gilbert de Clare, 7th Earl of Hertford and 3rd Earl of Gloucester born at Christchurch, Hampshire (now Dorset)England was an influential red-headed nobleman of Norman decent, also known as Gilbert 'the Red' de Clare. Between 1268 and 1271 he built the medieval Caerphilly Castle. It stands in the middle of the town of Caerphilly in south Wales. Gilbert de Clare was the son of Richard de Clare, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, and Maud de Lacy, Countess of Lincoln, daughter of John de Lacy and Margaret de Quincy. He was in his minority when his father died, and was a ward of Humphrey de Bohun, 2nd Earl of Hereford. In April 1264, he led the massacre of the Jews at Canterbury, as Simon de Montfort had done in London. Gilbert de Clare's castles of Kingston and Tonbridge were taken by the King. On 12 May he and Montfort were denounced as traitors. Two days later, just before the battle of Lewes, on 14 May, Montfort knighted the Earl and his brother Thomas. The Earl commanded the second line of the battle and took the King prisoner, having hamstrung his horse. As Prince Edward had also been captured, Montfort and the Earl were now supreme. On 20 October 1264, the Gilbert and his associates were excommunicated by the Papal Legate, and his lands placed under an interdict. The next month, they had obtained possession of Gloucester and Bristol, the Prince and the Earl were declared to be rebels. They at once entered on an active campaign, the Earl, in order to prevent Montfort's escape, destroying ships at Bristol and the Bridge over the Severn. He shared the Prince's victory at Kenilworth on 16 July, and in the battle of Evesham, 4 August, in which Montfort was slain. He commanded the second division and contributed largely to the victory. The castle of Abergavenny was committed to his charge on 25 October and on the 29th the honor of Brecknock was added. On 24 June 1268 he took the Cross at Northampton At Michaelmas his disputes with Llewelyn were submitted to arbitration, but without a final settlement. At the end of the year 1268 he refused to obey the King's summons to attend parliament, alleging that, owing to the constant inroads of Llewelyn, his Welsh estates needed his presence for their defense. When Henry III died, the Earl took the lead in swearing favoritism to Edward I, who was then in Sicily returning from the Crusade. The next day, with the Archbishop of York, he entered London and proclaimed peace to all, Christians and Jews, and for the first time, secured the acknowledgment of the right of the King's eldest son to immediately succeed to the throne. Now he was joint Guardian of England, during the King's absence, and on his arrival in England, in August 1274, entertained him at Tonbridge Castle. He first married Alice de Lusignan, the daughter of Hugh XI of Lusignan. They were married in 1253, when Gilbert was ten-years-old. She was of high birth, being a niece of King Henry. They produced two daughters before separating in 1267; allegedly, Alice's affections lay with her cousin, Prince Edward. Gilbert and Alice had produced two daughters: Isabel de Clare, married (1) Guy de Beauchamp, 10th Earl of Warwick; (2) Maurice de Berkeley, 2nd Baron Berkeley, and Joan de Clare, married (1) Duncan Macduff, 7th Earl of Fife; (2) Gervase Avenel. After his marriage to Alice de Lusignan was finally annulled in 1285, he married Joan of Acre, a daughter of King Edward I of England and his first wife, Eleanor of Castile. By the provisions of the marriage contract, their joint possessions could only be inherited by a direct descendant. On 3 July 1290 the Earl gave a great banquet at Clerkenwell to celebrate his marriage of 30 April 1290 with the Joan of Acre. Thereafter he and she are said to have taken the Cross and set out for the Holy Land, but in September he signed the Barons' letter to the Pope, and on 2 November surrendered to the King his claim to the advowson of the bishopric of Llandaff. In the next year, 1291, his quarrels with the Earl of Hereford about Brecknock culminated in a private war between them. Both were imprisoned by the King, and the Earl of Gloucester, as the aggressor, was fined 10,000 marks, and the Earl of Hereford 1,000 marks. He died at Monmouth Castle on 7 December 1295, and was buried at Tewkesbury Abbey."
