[5732] Homer B. James' web site reports:" Nicholas de Segrave, who, in the 43rd year of King Henry II, attended that monarch into France, but soon after espoused the cause of the barons, and became one of their most active leaders. In the 47th year of King Henry III's reign, he was among those who appeared openly in arms, and fortified Northampton, for which proceeding, his lands were seized by the crown. Upon the subsequent fall of Northampton to the royalists, Nicholas de Segrave fled to London, where the citizens having raised a large army for the barons, made him their general. At the head of this force, he marched with Gilbert de Clare, and Henry de Hastings, to the siege of Rochester, and thence to Lewes, at which place, the celebrated battle, so disastrous to the king, commenced, by a charge made by Segrave, at the head of the Londoners; in this, however, he was defeated by Prince Edward, who, flushed with success, pursued his advantage too far, and thus mainly contributed to the defeat which the royal arms sustained. The issue of this battle is well known. The king, Prince Edward, and the chief of their adherents became prisoners to the rebels, who followed up their triumph, by immediately summoning a parliament in the king's name, to which Nicholas de Segrave was summoned as Baron Segrave, on December 24, 1264. But the tide soon ebbing, he was among the defeated at Evesham, where he was wounded and made prisoner. He was, however, admitted to the benefit of the Dictum de Kenilworth, and obtained a full pardon, with restoration of his lands, which had been seized. In four years afterwards, he attended Prince Edward to the Holy Land, and when that prince ascended the throne, he appears to have enjoyed a large share of royal favor. In the 4th year of Edward's reign, he was with the king in a campaign against the Welsh, and was subsequently employed in Scotland and Ireland, having had a second summons to parliament, June 25, 1295. He married Maud de Lucy." Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_de_Segrave,_1st_Baron_Segrave.

The Ancestral File gives his ancestry, but it shows his father being born before his grandfather, and therefore is quite unreliable. Saul M. Montes-Bradley (saul@bradleyfoundation.org) writes via email 10 Feb 2004: "Alas, I have not yet found a link to this line. This seems to be the son of John who d. 1 June 1672 in Rehoboth, MA. If so, I believe they are of the same family of Richard and George, but still no proof. Today, I found in a book printed in New Hampshire quite some time ago, the tantalizing reference: "Richard Sutton who signed the Town Orders at Lancaster in 1653 [my guy] was undoubtedly the grandson of James and Isabella (Prescott) Sutton, who were married at Syandish Parish, Lancashire (ENG) 20 August 1570." [Isabella's mother was a Standish and James' entry is, of course, Jacobus] It goes on to refer to a number of Lancastrians who found themselves at Lancaster, MA at that time, and who were "relations" in the Old Country. I have grown to respect the peculiar relationship among "relations" back then. Their trade, all weavers, is also quite telling. A brief check yields the right names: Richard, Elizabeth, Katherine, John, Mary and George as the most common for the Suttons of the area. I think that a thorough check of the parish records there and, perhaps, within a few miles' radius will yield interesting results." Cf. the ancestry available through http://home.earthlink.net/~leolney/Homepage.html in 2004 (not verified). Ancestry.com offers: "Sutton Name Meaning - English: habitational name from any of the extremely numerous places called Sutton, from Old English suð 'south' + tun 'enclosure', 'settlement'."
