HE IS APPARENTLY NOT ROBERT'S FATHER, but Robert probably connects with the line farther back in time, so Ninian's ancestry is offered here. Ninian appears to connect to the Earls of Dunbar in the Earls of Moray line of descent, in which a Ninian Dunbar succeeds as Baronet of Grangehill and is M.P. for Elgin, 1646-47 - Ninian's son, Sir Robert Dunbar, was knighted in 1660 and is M.P. at Ninian's death, 1704 - ref. "Dunbar Pedigree," by Wm. Jaggard, 1910, used at Bodleian Library, Oxford, England, 6/87. Ninian's line is continued in this database, based on this "Dunbar Pedigree." In 1645 Montrose burned Ninian's house down because Ninian would not fight for Charles I. Ninian married (1) Ogilvy, daughter of Lord Banff (and had two sons) and (2) Christian (or Findnella), daughter of _____ Dunbar of Bennagefield (and had two more sons). Ninian is referred to in a Charter dated 30th October 1616 as "Ninian son and heir" and in an Elgin deed of 1644 as "Ninian of Grangehill."
An email 10 Oct 2004:
Thank you for your interest in the origins of Robert Dunbar of Hingham and the erroneous conclusion that he is the same person as Sir Robert Dunbar of Grangehill (not Georgehill, as Dobson lists it). This subject comes up every couple of years and happens so often that I ought to put it on the website. As one of his direct descendants I have been looking for his ancestry for over 20 years and have seen most of the sources that list his name. Alexander Knox of West Barns, East Lothian, Scotland has been working on it for at least 50 years. Neither one of us, nor any of the other 100s that have researched him have ever discovered proof of where he was born or who his parents were. Family tradition holds that he was born in Moray province. I never accept a single source. I always require at least 2 separate sources and prefer more. In the late 1890s a book was published regarding the ancestry of Robert of Hingham. The author listed Roberts Father as Sir Ninian in the vain hope of being descended from nobility. That book made it into the Library of Congress so everyone accepts it as the truth. Unfortunately that author never double-checked his resources. In 1642 Sir Ninian Dunbar of Grangehill married first Mary Ogilvy, daughter of Lord Banf, but she died soon after the marriage and produced no heirs. All Sir Ninians heirs came from his second wife, a distant cousin named Christine Dunbar of Bennagefield. They had 4 sons, Robert, David, John, and Son #4. Robert inherited his fathers title and lands and became Sir Robert Dunbar of Grangehill. On July 7, 1656 Sir Robert of Grangehill married Grisell Brodie. Their son Robert married Catherine Brodie in 1704. The prior Sir Robert of Grangehill was a member of Parliament and never left Scotland as I said in the orginal post. These people are the direct ancestors of the 9th and current Baronet of Durn, Sir Drummond Cospatrick Ninian Dunbar, though his son is probably the 10th Baronet by now. Robert Dunbar of Hingham, by his own testimony in a Suffolk County Court case was about 25 years of age in 1659. That would put his birth year 'about' 1634. Another source says he died at age 63 in 1693 which would put his birth at 1630. So, he was born sometime between 1630 and 1634. We know for certain that he was in Massachusetts between late 1651 and 1659 as he was 'employed' by Josiah Foote. His name appears on a plaque at the Saugus Ironworks National Monument as one of the 'Scots prisoners taken by Cromwells armies at the Battle of Dunbar, September 3-4, 1650'. No record exists as to how Robert got here. He doesnt show up as a passenger on the ship named Unity that brought the prisoners to this country. According to Rev. Peter Hobarts diary, he came to Hingham in 1655. 'The opinion generally prevailed in Hingham that Mr. Dunbar brought money enough with him to begin life without embarrassment, as for years there were but two men in the place who paid a higher tax.' No one knows where he got the money or why there is no record of his and Roses wedding. He and his wife Rose had their first son John born on December 1, 1657, 5 months after Sir Robert married Grisell. From this we deduce Robert was in Hingham for at least one night in March 1657, four months before Sir Robert married Grisell. Busy year if it is the same guy. Subsequent children were born in 1660, 1661, 1664, 1666, 1668, 1670, 1673, 1674, 1677, and presumably 1678/9. Robert of Hingham was buried behind the house on Scotland Street, but unfortunately the house burned down in the 1960s and the headstone no longer exists There is a picture of Peter Dunbars (Roberts son) headstone in a book at the NEHGS in Boston. There is abundant documentation on the nobles so we know all about Sir Robert. The Puritans also kept great records so we know all about Robert of Hingham. Check out 'The Descendants of Robert Dunbar of Hingham, Massachusetts' by Ann Theopold Chaplin, C.G., copyright 1992, Library of Congress Catalog Number 92-72652. Anundsen Publishing Company, Decorah, Iowa. My Grandmother is on page 325. David Dobsons research area is the Covenanting Armies and the early Scottish immigration. He is not an expert on my family. My own year of research suggest, but cant prove that Robert was from the Blervie or Burgie lines of Dunbar which would make him a Westfield Dunbar, not a Dunbar of Durn. There is a proposed DNA research project to determine which of the 5 branches of the House of Dunbar Robert came from. No one has contributed to that project yet. Regards, Dick Schoenling (Webmaster@ClanDunbar.com) -8th Great Grandson of Robert Dunbar of Hingham"

[13544] Charles and his family are listed in the 1920 federal census of Ringgold, Jefferson Co., PA - John H Dobson, age 65, is in the household (perhaps Minnie's father). The unverified Sargeant Famly Tree in Ancestry.com in 2016 offers: "When Charles Emerson Smathers was born on September 10, 1866, in Ringgold, Pennsylvania, his father, John, was 38 and his mother, Anna, was 37. He had seven brothers and two sisters. He died on October 6, 1956, in his hometown, at the age of 90." "The Jeffersonian Democrat [Brookville, PA], 11 October 1956," p. 2: "Charles Emerson Smathers, a retired Ringgold township farmer, died Saturday, October 6, in his home 26 days past his 90th birthday anniversary. Born in Ringgold township, Jefferson county, on September 10, 1866, he was the son of John and Ann (Jones) Smathers. He was married to Minnie Dobson Lingenfelter, of Worthville. Children surviving are Ross Smathers, of Ringgold; Doris, wife of Ralph Monis, of New York; Geraldine, wife of Roy Palumbo, of Reynoldsville, and Marie, wife of Frank Reed, of Punxsutawney R. D. His wife, two sons and three daughters preceded him in death. Survivors include 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren."
