See his biography in "History of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania," 1886 [reprinted in 1995 by Family Line Publishers, Westminster, MD]. p. 533, which states he is son of Zachariah Rice and Nancy Landis. Find A Grave memorial 40462119 offers:
Patriot newspaper, Harrisburg, PA, March 7, 1903:
MAIL CONTRACTOR DEAD
Civil War Veteran Who Was Known in This and Adjoining States
Carlisle, March 6 -- Harry C Rice, a prominent mail contractor, died here suddenly this afternoon of heart failure and hemorrhages. Deceased was in his sixtieth year and one of the most popular men in this community. For years he had been a mail route contractor and in this and many adjoining states he operated rural mail routes.
He was an active member of the First Lutheran Church and a member of the church council. He was a Civil war veteran and a member of Post No. 201, Grand Army of the Republic, of Carlisle. Two brothers, Zacharias and Joseph, and two sisters, Mrs Schall and Mrs Kling, reside in the West. He is survived by his widow and two children, Gouvenor, the South Hanover street grocer, and Mrs William A Drawbaugh of Harrisburg.
(info received from contributor 47232334):
The son of Zachariah & Nancy (Landis) Rice and, apparently, stepson of Margaretta Rice, in 1860, he was a farmer living in Spring Township, Perry County.
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Carlisle October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 1 as a private with Co. A, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1862. He also enlisted in Harrisburg August 31, 1864, mustered there September 1 as a private with Co. G, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged by general order May 29, 1865.
He stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair and dark eyes.
