[55625] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 25 January 2024: "Deer Isle - Jerauld 'Jerry' Leslie Hutchinson passed away late in the afternoon January 20, 2024, after a brief illness. Jerry was born October 2, 1933, on Little Deer Isle, to Walter T. and Flossie (Eaton) Hutchinson, the youngest of five children. Jerry spent his childhood days exploring the woods and shoreline of Little Deer Isle, visiting neighbors, spending time at Walter Douglass' store, listening to the conversations about the War, and in his words, "enjoying my own company." He started school at four years old, after he was found several times by teacher, Alice Eaton sitting on the doorstep listening to the classes. He was also found inside the school on weekends 'playing school', writing on the chalkboard and reciting what he had heard. So began his school career at the little schoolhouse on Little Deer Isle. Jerry graduated from Deer Isle High School in 1952 and went on to attend Drury College in Missouri, earning a bachelor's degree in U.S. History. On June 26, 1956, he married Rhea Conary, on Isle Au Haut, Maine. Soon after he enlisted in the United States Navy and served 4 years on the USS Coral Sea. After serving in the Navy, he attended the University of Maine in Orono and earned his teaching degree, followed soon after by a master's degree in Education. Jerry began his school teaching career at the old Sedgwick Junior High, also serving as Principal. The years at Sedgwick Junior High were followed by several years teaching and serving as Principal at Deer Isle and Stonington Schools and, in 1978 he became Principal of Easton High School in Easton, Maine, serving as Principal until 1986. Former students have always called him 'Mr. Hutchinson,' not Jerry, thus showing their honor and respect. Also during these years of teaching, Jerry taught Driver's Education at local schools and to students of all ages in the community. Former driving students have commented to Jerry's family about his patience as a driving instructor, never getting upset when mishaps occurred. After "retiring" in 1986, Jerry decided he needed to remain active so began working as a janitor at local schools and then as bus driver for many years, finally retiring for good at 86 years old. Jerry also served as Master of the Masonic Lodge in Deer Isle for several years and volunteered as a driver for Friends in Action up until November 2023. A lifelong diehard Boston Red Sox fan, Jerry took many bus trips to Fenway with his brother Elwell to watch their beloved Sox, always enjoying themselves whether they won or lost, bringing home various memorabilia. Summer weekend afternoons were spent in the backyard sitting in an Adirondack chair listening to a game on the radio. Dad, Grampie, Jerry, Mr. Hutchinson was a kind, gentle man, a friend to everyone he met, always looking out for others, taking care of his family to the end. He is sorely missed. Jerry is survived by his daughter, Vicki (Harold) Ingalls; daughter, Susan (Stephen) Hutchinson; grandson, Derek; granddaughters, Heather, Hollie, Hannah, Mary Anne, and Abigail; great-grandsons, Stanley, Dawson, and Roland; and several nephews, nieces, and many cousins, and friends. He is also survived by a special friend, Lola Marsten, with whom he enjoyed many outings in recent years. He was predeceased by his wife; parents and all four of his siblings, Walter Jr., Edward, Hazel, and Elwell."
