"Supplement to Sprague Families in America", by Dr. Warren Vincent Sprague, 1941, page 193.
James Sprague resided in Red Beach, (lower ward of Calais), Charlotte, and Machiasport, ME.
1810, January 4. Resident of Calais when he bought land of Stephen Jones. This was the same farm sold to Jones by James Sprague, Sr., December 3, 1787. 1817, July 21. He and wife Priscilla of Calais sold the land conveyed to "my father James Sprague", by Thomas, Downs, and Robbins in 1792. 1821, August 18. Resident of Charlotte when he bought land from Oliver Putman. Witness: John Sprague. 1824, April 1. William and John Sprague of Charlotte bought of Thomas Bridges of Charlotte, land on which James Sprague now lives. Mr. Sprague was extensively engaged in the lumber trade. After cutting the timber from his land in Red Beach (Calais), he secured land in Charlotte and made a road to it. He then moved his equipment and built the first saw mill on the Moosehorn Stream, near Charlotte Station, a few steps from the Sprague road.
1845, October 20. He and wife Priscilla of Charlotte sold and moved to Machiasport.
James Sprague served as private in Capt. J. Keen's Co., Lt. Col. O'Shead's regt. from July 15 to September 5, 1812. Company raised at Calais, service at Eastport. James Sprague's family appears in the 1800 Census of Calais thus: 2 males 16-26, 2 males 10-16, 1 male under 10, 1 female 26-36, 1 female 10-16, 2 females under 10. Evidently, some of his father's family lived with him.
