Notes for JACOB STROH:
July 1985
I am, Margaret Jean Crandall Gosses, Maude CRANDALL was my grandmother,
Ronald Clair and Mae Gilbert Crandall were my parents. I'm writing for HELP,
thinking we are related through the STROH line. Genealogy is something I have
been interested in and after Nan (as we called Maude) passed I feld an urgency.
Sadly, I discover now that i am not nearly prepared for the Stroh line as I
should be, nor am I able to trace them back from IN. A trip two
summers ago to Kendalville proved fruitless for the Shanks (the Stroh/Kiles
line) could tell nothing but present genealogy, which I wrote down.
I will write the names I have, possibly some will be familair to you.
I'd appreciate knowking EXACTLY how we are related and your genelogy.
While doing my mothers' genealogy, I discovered whole families migrating
to IN and I wonder if the STROH family did this.
Here is what I have:
Steuben County, IN marriage records for Jacob Stroh and Diana
Reppert, 4 Jan. 1872. John Reppert (JB's grandparents, Ben Reppert, father
and mother) and Mary C. Stroh. 4 Jan. 1872. Was this a doublering for
brothers and sisters? (Yes)
My great-great grandfather HUGH STROH married Catherin Feick (in our Carlis
books) and both lived in Crawford Co., OH. While reading the history of
Crawford Co., OH, I found a whole section about the STROH and REPPERT in
IN. Nothing about my Hugh and Catherine. The article was about Lottie
L. Stroh who married Rev. Ed. Johnson, an Evangelical minister. He pastored
churches in Ft. Wayne, IN, So. Bend, IN, Detroit, Mich. and San
Antonio, Texas.
Four Children: Marshall Stroh m. Mary Smith
Marian m. James Stark
Mildred
Edward Stroh m. Lois Peterson
LOTTIE of above was daughter of Joel Edwin Stroh and Mary Ann Clark.
JOEL was the son of Adam and Saloma Dice (JB's great-grandparents)
Eight Children: Joel (above)
John Henry m. Eunice M. McClure
Jacob m. Diana Reppert
(JB's grantmother)
Mary m. 1st - John Reppert
he d. when Ben was 4 years old
2nd - Nathan Pepper
3rd - Fred Sutter
Stephen m. Leah Kidney
Adam Wesley m. Ida Gaff
Aug m. 1st. Ed Crawford
2nd. Irving Deal
3rd. Barton Duguid
The father of ADAM was HENRY STROH
I wonder if the above are cousins to my line because Hugh
and Catherine Feik Stroh both lived in Crawford County for a
time before migrating to IN. All their children were born
OH.
Hugh and Catherine had eleven children and raised nine:
1) George Franklin 2) Samuel (of Coldwater, OH)
3) Joseph (of Monpelier, OH) 4) John
5) Abraham 6) Elizabeth
7) Mary m. Charlie 8) Emma
9) Anna (Aunt Ann Corliss) 10) Kate (1st Holder, 2nd Farris)
11) Lydia m. Kiles
At some point in time Hugh and Catherine migrated to MI. Both are buried in Quincy Cemetry.
Do you know any Corliss family left once related to Anna Stroh Corliss? I'll appreciate any help you are able to give. - Margaret Crandall Gosses

Notes for DALE W. REPPERT: REPPERT - McDERMID
Our farm was bought from the government by John McDermid on
June 16, 1835.
Our farm home was built about 137 years ago was the home of one of
and was the mome of one of the McDermid brothers, who founded Cambria
Mills. The other brothers lived on the other side of the pond. The
McDermid brothers built the dam, gristmill and a sawmill.
Augine Reppert bought the farm on Nov. 14, 1912. He d.,
Oct 31, 1923. Guy Reppert Sr., bought the farm from his father,
Augine Reppert, Ja., 5, 1924. Guy and Odeyne Reppert bought the
farm from Guy Reppert., Sr. on Feb. 8, 1946.
In 1874, Cambria had 250 inhabitants. There were eighteen business
places. In 1818, Cambira had three hundred inhabitiants and thirty-four
business places. The Cambria Mill Pond bridge collasped on May 14, 1914.
My father, Guy Reppert, Sr., had a collection of arrow heads were
picked up around our farm located north and east of the mill pond.
My father said at one time he found seven fire pots where the Indians
had made arrow heads. This was along the shore line of the pond. These
fire pots each measured seven to eight feet across and all one could plow
around this spot was charcoa, ashes and chipped stone. My father found
at least 400 arrow heads on the place and had given many away. There was
also a brick kiln on the farm, which was made of bricks. The kilns looked
much like an eskimo hut but measured twenty feet long with a hole in the
top of a flue. Flue was piled into the bottom of these kilns, then the
freshly made bricks stacked on top. The kindling was then ignited and the
kilns were allowed to burn three or four days before the bricks were cured
sufficiently. The material, yellow clay, for the bricks was on the farm.
The bricks were made in the open, using a press, which was operated by
horses and the circle path which the horses made in operating the press,
is still faintly visible.
The old Methodist Church of Cambria, which is now the community hall of
the Cambria Baptist Chruch, is constructed of bricks from our farm.
My father Guy Reppert, Sr., raised three children on the farm: Esther,
Dale, and Guy Jr.. Esther married Frank Aldrich, Dale married Anna Buell
Guy Jr. married Odeyne Hostetler. Frank Aldrich and Dale Reppert are now
deceased.
We have two boys, Fred and Gary Reppert. They were both raised on the
farm. Fred married Artis Barnett and they have two children, Nippi and Tony.
Gary is married to Cathy Slaybaugh and they have one son, Robby.

From: Muriel Cushing (flash1620@home.com) 25 Sept 2001: "I am at a loss as to how Mahala connects to Jabez and Elizabeth (Paine) Snow. Both Jabez and Elizabeth lived and d. in Eastham, MA. Their children are listed in the Hopkins silver book published by the Mayflower Society and the will of Jabez names all of his children. Also listed are the spouses of the children except for Edward. Mahala is not listed and providing she is a daughter it is going to be very difficult to prove. You would have to show the connection between MA and KY and how Mahala settled there plus primary documentation proving Jabez and Elizabeth as her parents. My thoughts are that she is the daughter of another Snow family or possibly a generation has been skipped and Jabez and Elizabeth were the grandparents. Most of the Snow's are Mayflower connected so the problem will be in finding Mahala's parents. This would probably connect her with the 5th generation which is very well covered and can be traced back. I have looked in all my records for a Mahala Snow and have none so far. Perhaps a querie to MAYFLOWER-L@rootsweb.com will help."

Emily Baker (CBaker3708@aol.com) responded via email 23 Oct 2001: ". . . it doesn't seem right to me that Mahala would have d. in Barren Co., KY ca. 1751 as stated by Muriel Cushing . . . . The 1991 edition of The Handy Book for Genealogists says that "As early as 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker explored the eastern part of Kentucky. Daniel Boone followed in 1767. The first permanent settlement took place at Harrodsburg in 1774." Harrodsburg is quite a bit northeast of Barren Co. and would have been settled before Barren. The article about KY in the 1911 edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica says that "Dr. Thomas Walker (1715 - 1794) as an agent and surveyor of the Loyal Land Company, made an exploration in 1750 into the present state (of Kentucky) from the Cumberland Gap, in search of a suitable place for settlement, but did not get beyond the mountain region. In 1752 John Finley, an indian trader, descended the Ohio river in a canoe to the site of Louisville. - - - - soon after (Daniel) Boone's first visit in 1767, travellers through the Kentucky region became numerous. The first permanent settlement was established at Harrodsburg in 1774." With Barren Co. being in the south-central part of the state, it seems unlikely that a non-Indian woman would have been there in the 1750s. Knowing that may help in figuring out who Mahala Snow Boylstone/Boydstone really is."

From http://backto60s.tripod.com/famhist/david_boydston.htm in September, 2001: By: Lynette Kurcina (LIPIKAS@aol.com) "Mahala/Mehala Mehitable Snow - b. about 1714-18; d. about 1750-60. I became interested in the Mayflower as I was growing up because there were great stories told to me by my grandmother and my mother. There were many stories passed down. I especially liked the stories about Constance Hopkins and Stephen Hopkins. At the Prill-Moede reunion, my Aunt Beth gave me grandma's genealogy research. As a present to my Aunt Beth and Uncle Arnold for their 50th wedding anniversary, I researched our Mayflower connection, and this is what I found. Although no marriage record have been found, I think we can assume, based on family records, that Mehala Snow m. David Boylstone/Boydstone. In a letter my grandmother received from Mrs. H. Clark, Secretary of the Green County Historical Society, and Mrs. John Berryman a descendant, they state that David m. Mehitable Snow in 1731. They state that David and Mehitable Boydston's children were the great-great grandchildren of Constance Hopkins. In the book The Boydstun Family by Gustine Courson Weaver written in 1926, Mrs. Weaver states, "I will always feel deeply indebted to those cousins - Mrs. Eva Boydstun Johnstone, and her sister, Mrs. Susan Boydstun Cody - both wives of Presbyterian ministers (now of Florida) - for, in their records, I found the clue that was of the greatest assistance of any I had thus far discovered. Their records stated that the wife of David Boydstone was "Mehala Snow." I recalled this name a few years ago, discovered it was also among my mother's data as a casual bit of recorded data. The marriage of David Boydston and Mehitable Snow is recorded by both the Daughters of the American Revolution and by the Mayflower Society. What happened? The Mayflower Society determined that Mrs. Weaver had assigned the wrong parents to Mehala/Mehitable Snow. When doing a time line, it is clear that Mehala was b. around 1714. Mrs. Weaver assigned a birth date of 1736. We now know that 1736 was the approximate date that Mehala and David Boydstone were m.. Besides the time line, the will of Jabez and Elizabeth Snow disproved this parentage. What do I think? Based on the stories that were passed down, that we are the descendants of Stephen Hopkins and his daughter Constance Hopkins who came over on the Mayflower, I think that Mrs. Weaver's assumption that their descendent was Mehala/Mehitable Snow is a good assumption, however the parentage is inaccurate. Another inaccurate assumption is in Gladys Boydstun Domonoske's book, THE BOYDSTUN-BOYDSTON FAMILY (3rd edition), 1980. She explained in detail why the previous assumption of Mehala Snow's parents was inaccurate. Mrs. Domonoske suggested that Mehala Snow might be the daughter of Elizabeth Hudson and John Snow. I would like to present some records that shed doubt on that assumption at the end of this report. If Mehala Snow's parents weren't Jabez and Elizabeth Snow or John and Elizabeth Snow who were her parents? Since we haven't been able to find records we make assumptions and I have a new assumption. My assumption is that Mahala Snow's parents were Elisha and Elizabeth Snow. Also, thank you to the researchers for the following information. Reading Mrs. Cody's book and remembering the stories that were passed down about Stephen and Constance Hopkins, I decided to read the Mayflower Family Volume 5 to see if I could find a clue. After reading volume 5, The Stephen Hopkins Family, The Mayflower Family, published in 1997, I found most children accounted for that stayed in the Massachusetts area. Taking a trip back in time to Constance and Nicholas Hopkins, we find they had the following children: Husband: Nicholas Snow - b.: 25 JAN 1599/00 at: Saint Leonard's ,Shorwditch, London, England [1]; m.: 1 JUN 1627 at: Plymouth, Plymouth County, MA [1]; d.: 15 NOV 1676 at: Eastham, Barnstable, MA [2] - father: Nicholas Snow; Mother: Elizabeth Rowlles - Wife: Constance Hopkins, b.: BEF. 11 MAY 1606 at: Shorwditch, London, England [3], d.: 15 NOV 1676 at: Eastham, Barnstable, MA [4]; Father: Stephen Hopkins; Mother: Mary. In considering a Mayflower connection , I began looking by location and the time line that past researcher were able to determine based on evidence. I found that the children of John Snow and Mary Smalley Snow, Isaac and Elisha, match our time line and our location.

John Snow Sr. took the freeman’s oath at Eastham, Massachusetts June 5, 1684. He is believed to have resided in Eastham most of his life except for a short period in Piscataway, NJ. Mary Smalley’s parents, John and Ann Walden, lived in NJ. John Snow d. in 1692. Isaac would have been about nine and Elisha about five years old. Mary Smalley rem. Ephraim Doanne shortly after and had six more children. All of her children from her second marriage are recorded as staying in Eastham. Mary Smalley Snow was a twin. Grandma had told me to look for twins when researching the Boydston lineage. Isaac Snow their son, is on the list of proprietors in 1707 and a selectman in 1709. It is noted that Isaac and Elisha Snow, sons of John went to Duck Creek Delaware in 1711. Looking at the maps I’ve attached, it was considered part of the Eastern Shores of Maryland and it was considered Pennsylvania. Later it was considered to be Delaware. We find this 'document in several sources: "A petition of 27 June 1711 from residents of Monomoit [Chatham] noted that 23 'ratable men' and their families had gone from there to 'a place named Duck Creek' in Pennsylvania. This area is Kent County Delaware. Both Isaac and Elisha Snow went. In the NEHG Register (New England Historic Genealogical Society), it states that Elisha and Isaac bought land in 1712/1713 near Duck Creek Delaware. There is a document that would be interesting to look at, although I have not yet. The Massachusetts State Archives have the Petition of Monomoit for incorporation (1711). Also cited is Scharf, History of Delaware, volume 2, page 1085. After the great snow storm in the summer of 1717 in the Boston area, Isaac and Elisha’s sister Mary Snow is recorded as joining her brothers in Kent County. John Snow Sr.'s son John moved to the area in 1722. Mayflower accounts show he had children and they are believed to have stayed in Massachusetts. His daughter Mary became Mary Nye. Marriages of his children are recorded in Massachusetts. It’s believed he might have had children in Delaware, as his son David is mentioned in his will. I don't think John Snow is Mehala's parent because of the time line. On the web and in the books, there are incomplete accounts of Isaac and Elisha Snow. Some of the following information that I found has a probably by the date. Isaac m. Martha ____ and had six children. Recorded are John and William. Elisha Snow is recorded as being m. twice. One marriage, some Web sites record, as Elizabeth Bedwell. Only Elisha sons are recorded in his will. No birth records have been found. The sons were: Elisha b abt.1713; James b abt.1715; Joshua b abt.1717; Jesse b abt.1719; Silas b abt.1738; John b abt.1740. Phebe was mentioned in brother John’s will. Gladys Domonoske’s research shows the known children of the marriage of David Boylston and Mehitable/Mahala Snow to be: James b 1738 m. Mary Prewitt; David Jr. b 1740 m. Esther Ann Burris; Nancy b abt.1745 m. Joshua Yates; George b abt. 1746 m Eunice Burris; Jesse. William b 1753 son of Sarah Pruitt (David 2nd marriage) m Eliz. Christian. Gladys also notes other possible daughters Mahulda, Melinda, Sabra, Cynthia, Tabitha. I think possibly Presley was one of their sons because I have found records of Presley Boydstone in Monongalia County with David Jr and George Boydstone. These records are on David Jr.'s page. The recorded names of their children's children, that we know of, are: parents: Joshua Yates and Nancy Boylston: children: William, Benjamin, Mehitable/Mahala, Nancy, Johanna, Joshua Jr., Elijah. Parents: David Jr Boydston and Hester Ann Burris/Burrows/Burroughs (their records on their web pages and I found Hester Burris/Burroughs father John's will) - Children: Boaz Burris b 1791 m Mary Willey (records on Mary Willey's page); Amelia m Jerimiah Glasgo. Other children noted by Gladys were; David b 1789, Mary, and Nellie.

There are many excellent web sites listing more information about David and Mehala's children. On this web site I am concentrating on records for David Jr., George, and their wives, plus the Willey family. I must say I have more records than I have time. Looking at David Boydston Jr.'s wife Esther Burris/Burrow/Burroughs family we find that the Burris/Burrow/Burroughs family owned a Mill on Duck Creek in Duck Creek, Delaware (more on this on the Burris/Burrough page). Looking at James Boidstone we find that he was listed in Morgan District, Rutherford County in North Carolina 1790 Census. Families living near James in the 1790 were some of the early settlers of the now Delaware area and lived near each other in that area. Names that are listed with James are; Hill, Brown, Price, Claypole, Box, Newport, Wood, Gardner. Families moved together in the colonial days. I remember a few stories my grandmother told me as a child. My main motivation for researching the Boydston family is to preserve the stories that were passed down and hopefully continue telling them. If you have any stories please let me know so I can put them on the web site. Grandma told me many stories that her father had told her when she was young. When she told the story of Constance Hopkins coming on the Mayflower I could imagine being there but was glad to be comfortable. I would think how fortunate we are to not have the hardships of the early settlers. Grandma Noerenberg told me that "many men wanted to marry Constance, there was even a duel for her hand in marriage". I have read that some research indicates that Constance was older then ten when she came on the Mayflower. This story also indicated that she was. I thought you’d find interesting, one account, published in 1875: Doty, Leister -Duel. The first duel of New England is said to be that between Edward Doty and Edward Leister, servants of Steven Hopkins. They fought with sword and dagger and both were wounded. Having no statute against the offense, the Pilgrims met in council to determine the punishment. It was, according to observers, exemplary. The parties were ordered to be tied together, hand and foot, and to remain twenty-four hours without food or drink. The intercession of their master and their own entreaties procured their release before the sentence was carried out. -Drake, Samuel Adams, Nooks and corners of the New England coast: 1875. I contacted the Mayflower Society in Boston several years ago when beginning my research. Although I was given a year extension on my deadline to find a record that directly links Mehala Boydston to Elisha Snow and Elizabeth Snow, I was unable to respond with that record. Unless we find this record or DNA becomes specific, right now, we can't prove our lineage and without proof the Mayflower Societies by-laws don't offer membership. For now, unless a record is found, applying with the Mayflower Society would be a donation. There are other non-profit organizations on this web site for your consideration if you are considering a donation. Quoting my late mother "We are members of the Mayflower Association; ours is the pursuit of truth"! As promised here are a few records that shed doubt on John Snow and Elizabeth Hudson being Mehala Snow's parents: John Snow Jr. was the son of John and Mary Snow who did not arrive on the Mayflower. They were transported to Maryland and were some of the first settlers there. There is record that John Snow Jr. m. Elizabeth Hudson, however, he d. in 1709. John Snow Sr. d. in Prince George's Co. Maryland in 1739 and left his entire estate to his wife Mary. Although a will is recorded for John Snow in 1709, I haven't found it. Elizabeth Hudson's brother became the surviving administrator:

1709 - Somersett County. The Account of Richard Hudson the surviving administrator of the goods chattels and credits of John Snow Junior late of our Sd, County decd. The said accountant chargets himself for all and singular the goods chattels and credits of the said decd as per inventory appears amounting to 03.01.6 and prays allowance for his payments hereafter mentioned. Payments Made: To the admr. For ffunerally charges as per acct. and per trouble of his horse 10874.10.7; To Peter Dent depty comrs. for his fee 60…0.4.2; To Adam Spence per judgement of court As needed per receipt appears 120...0.10.9; Total: 5.1.9 Another record I found is in the Patent Book No. 18 Cavaliers and Pioneers, by Nugent. On page 181 it lists Elizabeth Hudson, Widow, 400 acs. St Anne's Par Essex Co; adj. John Smith, Pane and Cornwall; 1 Feb 1738/39…. She is requesting a land grant the same as Edward Dren received. "And Wheras Elizabeth Hudson made humble Suit & obtained a Grant for the same." When a husband d. in those times, a relative would take responsibility for the wife and children. They established orphans courts for that purpose. I haven't seen mention of children to this marriage. I haven't found Boylstone records in St. Anne's Parish, Essex County, Virginia. The Hudson family owned a substantial amount of land. I enjoyed the Hudson web sites and perhaps we have another connection.

David Boylston/Boydston Sr. - b. abt. 1710 on the Eastern Shores of Maryland -- When researching David Boydston Sr., I am glad there are a lot of Boydston/Boydstun researchers. It becomes complicated for reasons I'll list on this page. Thanks to Glady Boydstun Domonoske and her book, "The Boydston/Boydstun Family," we can determine that David Boydston was probably b. on the Eastern Shore of Maryland abt. 1710. The Eastern Shore of Maryland encompassed what is now Maryland, Delaware, and part of what is now Pennsylvania. It helps to look at maps of the time period when researching. As the population grew, the names of the different areas changed. In 1710 rivers were the roads and most of the settlements were near rivers. On my web page and in my research, I have written records exactly as I find them. I may have made an error now and again, but I've tried not to. The first records Glady's found of the Boylston family were: Court Proceedings 1664 John Balley vs. Raymond Staplefort.

Thomas Boylson, aged 30 worked on Balley and Staplefort plantaion 1664 -testifies- Thomas How aged 30 testifies.

Court Proceedings 1665 - p 423 - John Balley summoned to testify against Raymond Stapleton.

The Isle of Man is part of Great Britain, situated midway between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Was this record a misprint of Powicks name or was Thomas Boylstone from Perwick? Gladys, who viewed the record did not conclude that Thomas Boylstone was from Perwick, however if anyone does see this record, it would be interesting to see how the other records were written at that time. It may not be significant, but I don't want to overlook this.)

In the book Talbot County Maryland Land Records, by R. Bernice Leonard I found additional records:

19 March 1665/6, Thomas Bolton, planter, to William Lewis, planter- 450 acres "Boylton Neck" at the head of the Nanticoke River. Wit: Webb

20 July 1668 Francis Armstrong to Jeremiah Markcome -release of B/S Markcome passed to Thomas Boyleston and from Boyleston to Armstrong. Wit: Daniel Clarke Walter Dickinson.

7 Sept. 1666 Alexander Maxwell and Mary, his wife, to Henry Pratt, planter 100 acres "Maxby" on west side Coursey Creek adjoining the land laid out for William Hill, Wit: Thomas Bylston, William Taylor.

Looking at the original manuscripts, they are often hard to read. After viewing original manuscripts from the early PA area (now Delaware), I thanked the many people who took upon themselves the painstaking job of putting these documents to print. When determining what records belong to our family, you can see by the above records that the name is often spelled differently, sometimes in the same record. It takes a lot of time and comparison to determine if a record is a Boylston/Boydston record. Names were often written as they sounded. In the translation from early record to print, some names were hard to read and some were misspelled. Glady's Domonske did an excellent job researching the Boydston/Boydstun family and provides many records in her book. She concluded that we are the descendants of Thomas Boylston of Maryland and that he was not the Thomas Boylston from Boston who came in 1635. In the book Bond's Genealogies and History of Watertown by Henry Bond, there is a Boylston geneology. It states that Henry Boylston of Lichfield England estate at Weston, Staffordshire had a son Thomas who d. in 1648. The children of Thomas of London were; John, of Market Bosword, who had 19 children, Thomas who came to America in 1635 and settled in Watertown (now Boston), Edward unm., and Richard a clothier. In this book on page 702 the name (Boidson) is in parenthesis as a variation of the name. On page 90, the names Boylson, Boyson, and Boalson are listed with this record as variations of the name or how the name is found in records. Gladys did not think we were related to this family because they did not use Boydston. The records I found indicate they did use both Boylston and Boydston. In the book, The Great Migration Begins, by Timothy Hawkins, another record of the Boylston family using Boydston is found: On 1 April 1651 "William Clearke of Watertown, Weaver, sold to "Timothy Haukins of the same town, carpenter," thirty-five acres of upland, being the first lot in the third division of the Great Dividens, granted by the town to Thomas Arnold, sold by him to Thomas Boiddson, and by him to the said Clearke [MLR 1:22]. It is possible that Thomas Boylston of Maryland was the cousin of Thomas Boylston of Watertown. In Gustine Weaver's book, The Boydston Family, written in 1926 she wrote, "Three sons of Sir Mathew Boyd came to American in the 17th Century. They were Cornelius, Marmduke and Gustavius". She writes "Cornelius was the father or grandfather of Thomas Boyd who m. Mahulda Box and he was the father of David Boylston/Boydston b. 1710. So far this assumption hasn't fit into the fact that the Boydstons used the name Boydston, Boylston , Boidstone, and Boilstone. The above first names don't appear to have been passed down, and the time line for this assumption doesn't match. Glady Domonske goes into detail in her book about why this assumption is inaccurate. I found in a reference that the following names are listed in the book, A List of Emigrants from England to America 1682-1692 by Michael Ghireell (this was a reference to look in this book, I haven't seen the book yet): Anne Boylston Maryland 1684 page 9. Another reference (lost this one and will have to look again for it):

William Boyson Virginia 1663-1679 page 123 of ?. There are several names in Gustine Weavers book published in 1926, that are worth looking into. She mentions Mahulda Box and William Boylston/Boydston as the parents of David Boylston/Boydston. No one has proven or disproved this. She state Mahulda Box was the daughter of Elisha Story. The Box and the Story families were early settlers of the Eastern Shores of Maryland. Mrs. Weaver researched the Boston area and made some connections that weren't correct. Mrs. Domonske discovered our early records were in the Maryland area. When doing research I am grateful to the two authors and the others that contributed, because their research makes our research possible and it is so much easier to do research now, then it was. A record that may be a Boylston record is on page 255 of the book Early Pennsylvania Land Records, Minutes of the Board of Property of the Province of Pennsyvania, edited by William Henry Egle. I think it is well documented in family records that David Boydston/ Boylstone m. Mehala Snow about 1736. Records of five sons and one daughter have been found:

James b 1738 m. Mary Prewitt
David Jr. b 1740 m. Hesther Ann Burris/Burroughs
Nancy b abt.1745 m. Joshua Yates
George b abt. 1746 m Eunacy Burris/Burroughs
Jesse
William b 1753 son of Sarah Pruitt (David 2nd marriage) m Eliz. Christian

Gladys also notes other possible daughters Mahulda, Melinda, Sabra, Cynthia, Tabitha. I have found records of Presley Boydstone in Monongalia County with David Jr and George Boydstone. These records are on David Jr.'s page. I've also found a record of Jacob Boylston witnessing a will in the Maryland Calendar of Wills however I don't know where he fits in: 4 March 1781 31 March 1781- Kreamer, Jost (This should be Creamer.) Wife. Margaret Creamer. Stepson: Adam Creamer. Ex. Jacob Boylstone and John Eckman. Township omitted.

The sons and daughters of Mahala and David Boylston/Boydston are believed to have been b. on the Eastern Shores of Maryland. I have found records of the Burris/Burroughs family in Duck Creek, Delaware. Those records are on the Burris/Burroughs page. All of their children m. spouses whose family names can be found in the early PA now Delaware area. David and Mahala Boylstone/Boydston's family moved to Frederick Co., Maryland. This is found in William Boydston's revolutionary war records. When they moved is not clear to me. Their sons, George and David Jr. moved to Monongolia County as adults and James went to Virginia and then North Carolina and to Barren County, Kentucky. There are records for James on the web and in both Boydston/Boydstun books. In the book The History of Western Maryland, by J. Thomas Scarf, Volume II, the following record in Frederick County can be found: At the June term of Court 1749, the following were the grand jury: Thomas Stoddert, William Wilburn, Charles Wood, Charles Cheney, John Adamson, John Johnson, Isaac Baker, William Boyd, William Shepherd, Samuel Ellis, Nathaniel Magruder, Hugh Conn, William Pritchett, William Gray, Thos. Boystone, Walter Evans, and William Nichols. On page 662 of the same book Scarf states "Prior to 1798 no records of marriages were made, or, if they were, they have been lost." (Since this book was written some records have been found, mostly church records):

Another record from the Calendar of Maryland State Papers- The Black Books is: Sundry Freeholders of Frederick County. To Gov. Samuel Ogle and the Upper and Lower Houses of Assembly, Copy of 703 D.S. 1 p. 31.2cm x 21.4cm Mutilated - Signatures: Geo: Bussey, Jr., Sam'l Offutt, John Fleming, Nin'n Tannehill, Jr., William Offutt, 3rd, Geo: Ramsay, William Cooper, Basil Lucas, Wm Herbert, Thos. Pritchett, Wm Pritchett, Thos. Lucas Jr., John Hopkins, William Offutt, Arch'd Offutt, William Tracy Jr., Cornelus Etings, Tho: Boylstone (M.), Joseph Belt, Wm. Chambers (M.), Jeames Holmead, Jr., Nini Beall of Nini, Michael Jones, Jacob Beall, James Lamar, Thos Fletchall, Thos Beall, Nehe'h Wade, George Juee, John Fletchall (M.), Thomas O'Rork, James Wards (M), Ales'r Lamar other name: Laurance Owen.

I have also found records of David Jr. and George Boydstone in Frederick County and have put them on David Jr.'s page on this web site. David's wife Mehala Snow probably d. as he rem. Sarah Pruitt and had at least one son William in that marriage. From family stories it is believed that David Sr. went with his oldest son James to North Carolina. I hope this information will be helpful to other researchers. I have put more Boydston records on other web pages.

Dan Page (depage@ipa.net) offered via email 15 Sept 2003: "Most Boydstun "researchers" simply copy one of the various published versions. That's a sad mistake. We owe much for what Gladys Domonske collected, but there are many questions. I have little tolerance for those who decide to use a DAR version when the available evidence suggests outright errors. About Mahala Snow, w.o. David Boydstun. It seems rather obvious to me that someone b. and raised in MD in the early 1700's did not go to New England to find a bride. Most people then found their spouse within a walking distance of about 5 miles. (Spurious, unproven accounts claim that Mahala was the daughter of Jabez and Elizabeth (Paine) Snow of Eastham, MA, apparently based only on the coincidence that they named a daughter Mahala.) Looking closer to the Boydstun homebase (Dorchester-Somerset Co's, MD) one could make a case that Mahala was probably the daughter of John Snow b. abt 1686 d. Dec. 17, 1705, and Elizabeth Hudson of Somerset Co., MD. See Old Somerset Co. on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, by Clayton Torrence, pg. 446. I've not pursued this possibility, though some claim it as fact: e.g. WFT CD 8 tree #1781 shows Elizabeth Hudson had a sister Violetta and a brother Richard, all three children of Nickolas and Elizabeth (Freeman) Hudson. e.g. WFT CD 42 tree #1288 carries Mahala's ancestors further, showing her the daughter (granddaughter?) of John Snow b. abt 1686 d. Dec. 17, 1705, and Elizabeth Hudson b. 1671(?!). John Snow is shown as the son of Nicholas Snow. Elizabeth Hudson is shown as the daughter of Nicholas Hudson b. 1643 d. Jan. 1675/76 and Elizabeth Freeman b. 1647. Nicholas Hudson is shown as the son of Richard Hudson b. 1608 England d. 1659 Accomack, Virginia, and Mary Hayes b. about 1610 d. about 1670. Also, Kathryn Costello posted this version on WorldConnect. I've not tried to contact her to see if she has documented sources, or who originally reported these matters. No proof or sources were provided for any of this information, and we have not verified any of these claims. However, I wish I had access to resources for checking further, as these seem to be the only clues I've found that look promising - i.e. Snow links in MD. Some discrepancies seem to jump out from this - e.g. John Snow b abt 1686, but his wife b 1671 (Jackie Ginn shows the birthdate as 4 Mar 1671). Possible but very unlikely that he md someone abt 15 years older.... If you decide to pursue Mahala's origins further I'd be very interested in what you find. I'm particularly interested in what MD records and sources might show, rather than what WFT CDs, someone's gedcom, et al claim, except as possible clues, unless documented or carefully explained. Incidentally, a John Snow much younger than Mahala appeared on the 1810 census of Barren Co., KY, where Mahala is reported to have d.. Whether or how related no one seems to have investigated. His origins might reveal
clues about Mahala's origins.

"The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy, Frederick A. Virkus, ed., Vol. 2, 1926 (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1968), p. 383 shows the purported line from Stephen Hopkins to the 20th century through "Mehitable" (1731-1811), daughter of Jabez Snow and Elizabeth Paine, and wife of David Boydstone [sic] (1726-1811).

Mahala's birth year is from the "U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900" (Provo, UT: The Generations Network, Inc., 2004).
