He joined the Lutheran church at Loysville in early youth and lived a consistent follower of the faith until his death, serving his church in the capacity of elder, deacon, Sunday school superintendent and on various committees - always faithful and willing to do whatever his hand found to do, and do it with his might in the service of the Lord. He acquired a good education and began teaching at the age of 18 and taught in the schools of this county for 24 years. He was considered one of the strongest and best teachers in the county, having been awarded a diploma at the Perry County Teachers' Institute at its annual session of 1880 for the "Best School Room Program" exhibited at the Institute exhibition. He was employed at the State Agricultural Department at Harrisburg as a correspondent and wrote many articles for publication in various agricultural papers. In politics he was a staunch Republican and a valued member in the councils of his party. He was a strong, energetic man, full of interest and enthusiasm In all affairs pertaining to the general welfare of the community. He was always active in all movements making for progress and the betterment of spiritual or civil life, fearless of criticism,, having the courage of his convictions, steadfast and loyal in his friendship. By bis death the family loses a kind and loving husband and father, the church a faithful and conscientious worker, and the community is useful and efficient citizen.
