Enlisted on January 4, 1864 as a Private in the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery, Company M, at the age of 44. Wounded in right leg, amputated on June 18, 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. Died of wounds. His parents were Father-Nathan Higgins and Mother-Anna Leland. He was married to Lydia Hodson. They had 8 children all born in Cooper, Washington Co., ME. Civil war pension records show Lydia Higgins received a widows pension November 29, 18?? (possibly 1864) for her husband Nathan Higgins Jr. service in the 1st regiment Maine Heavy Artillery. A pension for a minor was given in 1868. Source: Case Files of Approved Pension Applications of Widows and Other Dependents of Civil War Veterans. Lydia Higgins (nee Hodson) received a widow's pension until her death March 14, 1866. They had been married May 1st 1843 at Cooper, Washington County, Maine. The children were Esther E. Higgins, born September 22, 1851; Nathan Higgins, born November 13, 1855; Dolly Higgins, born July 26, 1857; George Higgins, born June 13, 1859; William C. Higgins, born October 19, 1861. They had 2 other children who were not pension eligible. Julia Ann Higgins,born January 22nd 1849 and Stillman Higgins born November 13th 1851. Henry Hayward became the children's guardian on June 5th 1868."
