[19980] He joined Company N, 4th Indiana Cavalry as a Private 28 July 1862 at Bowling Green, IN. He served as a courier and was behind enemy lines several times. He was promoted to Corporal and then Sergeant, and mustered out at Edgefield, TN 29 June 1865. His military record states that he had a dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, was an engineer, and stood 5 feet 9 3/4 inches. Freeborn was working in Brazil, IN by 1868. He and Jane Daves also had a son in late January or early February, 1871, possibly dead at birth or soon thereafter on 5 February 1871. The 1870 census of Brazil Twp., Clay Co., IN lists Freeborn, Jr. (age 29, a carpenter with real estate valued at $600 and personal estate valued at $ 125) with wife Jane (age 29), both b. in IL, daughter Cora (age 2) and John P. Salts (age 8, b. in IN). The 1910 census of Traverse City, MI lists Freeborn Gardner (age 68, b. in IL; father b. in OH, mother b. in KY) with wife Mary (age 64, b. in IN; father b. in MD, mother b. in OH) and a son (Harry, age 21, b. in MI). The 1920 census of Traverse City, MI lists (on W. 7th Street) Freeborn Gardner (age 78) and wife Mary M. (age 73) as the entire household. The 4 June 1900 federal census at Traverse City, MI lists Freeborn (age 58), Mary (53), Cora (30 - daughter), Myrtle A. (22 - daughter), Harrison W. (11 - son), Wellington Turner (44 - brother-in-law) and Joranna Horton (20 - servant). His obituary ( Traverse City Record Eagle, 5 Oct 1922) states ". . . one of Traverse City's best beloved and respected pioneer residents, [died] at his home 330 Seventh Street. He had been ill for the past two years and six months, during which time he was confined to his bed. . . . On August 17, 1885, he moved with his family to Traverse City and engaged in the grocery business on South Union Street where the Traverse City Steam Laundry is now located. Mr. Gardner was one of the older group of business men who aided in the development of the city from a small lumbering community to its present size. Left to mourn their loss are three daughters, Mrs. E. D. Piper of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Gertrude Taylor of Detroit, Mrs. Fred Wood of this city; one son, H. W. Gardner of Detroit; six grandchildren . . . . Mr. Gardner was for years active in the Methodist church, of which he had been a member since boyhood, and was also a member of the local G.A.R. and of the Old Fort Harrison Old Fellows Lodge in Terre Haute, Ind." Freeborn applied for a Civil War invalid's pension on 25 Aug 1884.

[1296] Robert m. Anne ______. A Christopher Podington is listed in the Devon Muster Roll as an able pikeman of the Hundred of Tiverton (1569). The name does not appear in parish of Podington at this time, but this only means noone of the name was suitable for muster. Robert had three sons, Joshua, George and Robert, all weavers and clothiers (per his will). His death and probate dates are from Patrick McDonald (see notes for his son, George). See the Rev. Charles N. Sinnett, "The Purinton-Purington Family of America."
