"Bangor Daily Nws [Bangor, Maine]," 25 April 2022: "Bingham - Gifted athlete, Louis Henry Collette, who graduated from Farmington High School in 1947 and was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1948, died Feb. 8, 2022, at the age of 92. Louis was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002. During the induction ceremony, Louis was honored as 'the crème de la crème on the baseball diamond. He was the complete package - he could hit with power, possessed blazing speed on the base paths, and could run down fly balls with the best.' At Farmington, where he was affectonately known as 'Lou' or 'Sonny,' Louis competed in football, basketball, track, and - his first love - baseball. He was named to the Class B All-Maine Football Team, and and was State Champion in the low hurdles. In the days when modern refrigerators were still a luxury, Louis stayed in shape by cutting and hauling ice for his father, Refino Collette. It was here that he would also attend what was then called Farmington State Teacher's College. After playing semi-Pro ball for the Farmington Flyers, he caught the eye of Cardinals' veteran scout John Dickson. Eighteen year old Louis Collette was thrilled to sign with Dickson for $150 a month and a whopping $125 bonus. His first stop was with the Hamilton Red Wing Club in Hamilton, Ontario, where Louis started in center field. He also played for the Geneva Red Birds in the Alabama State League and the Salisbury, Maryland Club in the Eastern Shore League. He played a total of five years of pro ball. With the Korean War heating up, Louis elected to serve at the height of his baseball career. While there were no bonuses in the U.S. Air Force, he spent much of his enlistment playing in U.S.A.F. baseball tournaments at stations such as Lackland and Randolph AFB. Although he eagerly reported for spring training in 1955, Louis unfortunately injured his throwing arm, thus ending a promising pro career. Louis enjoyed several years in the American West with his new bride, Audrey Pettengill, where he graduated with a Master of Science (MS) from the University of Montana (then called Montana State University). True to form, his thesis was on the benefit of isometric training exercise. In 1959 he began a long and storied career as teacher and coach in his home state of Maine, first at Lisbon High School. In his second year at the Falls, Louis steered his football squad to a perfect season and Class C title. He had many similar successes as a multi-sport coach and athletic director at Rockland High and Brunswick Junior High. In his later years, Louis returned to one of the favorite hunting and fishing destinations of his youth, Bingham, Maine. Here, he made his home and met his beloved partner of many years, Francis Gordon.
It was in coaching that Louis Collette found his true calling. 'Always a gentleman,' said his Hall of Fame colleagues, 'he had the respect of his team mates, students, and contemporaries. His sense of propriety, his virtue, and his belief system set him aside from others - he was truly a great athlete.' Louis H. Collette was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey. He is survived by his sister, Eloise Collette; his partner, Francis Gordon; his daughters, Lisa Collette and Lanita Collette; and his grandaughters, Audrey Collette and Kate Collette."
