[60780] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 29 October 2025: "Machias, Maine - Julia E. Worcester passed away on October 27, 2025. She was born March 18, 1931, in Jonesport, ME, the daughter of Verrill R. and Erma (White) Worcester. She was known to her family, friends, and students as Ma, Julia, Aunt Julia, Jules, and Mrs. Worcester. It didn't much matter what you called her, when she talked, we all listened as we all sought her advice, wisdom, and solace. Julia is survived by daughters, Deborah Metzler (Allan) and Cynthia Grant (Everett); as well as six grandchildren, Jacob (Michele) and Rebekah Metzler (Meghan Lewis), Sarah Rygiel (Jeffrey Washburn) and Christopher (Diana) Worcester, and David (Gabby) and Emily Grant (Austin Sciacca); as well as seven great-grandchildren. Julia was predeceased by her husband, Oswald Worcester and her son, Oswald 'Robin' Worcester Jr.; and siblings, Verrill Worcester Jr., Joyce Hilliard, Dwight Worcester, Cassie Hardwick, and David Worcester. She is survived by her brother, Everett (Lee) Worcester. She was a proud graduate and salutatorian of Columbia Falls High School ('49) and the University of Maine Machias, Summa cum laude ('83). An exemplary community member, she participated in many local civic organizations including; 4-H, the Columbia Cemetery Society and the Milbridge Medical Center board of directors but served as connective tissue in far more ways than could ever be detailed here. Never one to be idle, Julia worked in a variety of occupations that included blueberry raker, sardine packer, factory worker, waitress, and short order cook. At age 52, following her college graduation, she became a third and fourth grade teacher, and after retiring she was a substitute teacher and volunteer in MSAD #37 into her early eighties. In 2003, she testified before the U.S. Senate Governmental Affairs Committee on behalf of Maine teachers and other state workers, calling out the unfairness of the Social Security Government Offset Provision and Windfall Elimination Provision. Her advocacy was part of a decades long effort that ultimately led to the Act's repeal in 2024. As the result of the repeal teachers and others across Maine and the nation now receive all earned social security benefits. Julia enjoyed time with family and friends visiting, playing cards, games and going just about anywhere especially if it was to a sporting event. In the winter months you could always find her inside a basketball gymnasium, often cheering on her beloved Narraguagus Knights, but truly anyone bouncing a ball. She also followed the ups and downs of New England sports, particularly the Celtics, Patriots, and Red Sox."
