Bela II, blinded by his uncle, succeeded his uncle (who died childless, known as Hungary's worst king).
From: Bryant (skip1@ix.netcom.com) via email 8 Oct 1998 (not verified by AEM):
"The "uncle" was Kalman (Koloman, Coloman) whose son Stephen (Istvan) II succeeded him. It was Stephen, not Kalman, who died childless. Bela II succeeded not his uncle (Kalman) but his cousin Stephen II. [CAVEAT: The only sources I have for Stephen II as son of Kalman are the statements in your notes and http://www.dcs.hull.ac.uk/cgi-bin/gedlkup/n=royal?royal06334 [Brian Hull's Directory of Royal Genealogy)]
"Who is "known as Hungary's worst king?" Does your note refer to Kalman, or to Stephen II? I cannot find anything about the life of Stephen (except birth, death, and regnal dates), let alone anything which would make him a candidate for "worst."
"Kalman may well qualify for "most wicked" if the story about his blinding his brother and nephew is true; but "worst?" I submit not :--
"'Kalman had finally, in 1106, to bend under pressure from Rome and reverse the synod of Szabolcs (1092) and impose celibacy on the clergy in Hungary. He was a superb administrator and Hungary, during his reign, was probably the best-governed state in Europe. He simplified and regulated the tax system, promoted agriculture by giving farmers favored treatment with regard to duties, and promoted trade by improving the infrastructure of transportation. He fostered the welfare of the lower classes by removing restrictions on alienation of landed estates, encouraging the manumission of serfs, and banning the exportation of slaves.'"
{From my note on Kalman, cadged from Britannica XI 1911}
"My personal candidate for Hungary's worst: Laszlo (Ladisalus) IV --
"'Laszlo IV finished the conflict with Ottakar of Bohemia by contributing to his overthrow at Durnkrüt in 1278. But he would have nothing to do with the Angevin wife to whom his father had married him as a child (see Stephen V of Hungary) and so begot no lawful issue. He was "a wild youth who cared only for his Cumanian companions, ... and so favoured his pagan friends that Pope Nicholas IV preached a crusade against him ..." (Encycl. Brit., `56, 11:902) because his court became more pagan than Christian under the Cumanian influence. He was killed in the crusade against him, and Hungary was left in turmoil.'"
